Any coffee concentrate recommendations?
So long story short. COVID ruined my nose. There's some things my brain doesn't remember what they smell like. So it assigns them all this one smell. Think something between a wet ashtray and a dumpster. Its terrible.

Among those things are urine, poop, and the smell of brewing coffee. Once the coffee is brewed it smells like coffee. But the smell of it brewing smells like i'm making a big cup of warm fecal matter.

I love my caffeine in the AM so I've used MIO Energy in water. It gets me by. But was thinking for trying some coffee concentrate. I could just mix it with some milk or water in the AM for a cold coffee.

I'm open for any other suggestions as well as I'm getting bored of the Mio Energy in my water.

Make your own cold brew. Grind of a bunch of coffee, throw it in a Ziploc with good water. Toss it in the refrigerator overnight… Very strong cold brew ready to go.

Sorry for your sense of smell… I have several friends with this… It seems to get slowly better over a long time.

In the spirit of your cold coffee desire, I'm suggesting something different than a concentrate.

I'm a fan of cold brew, and I have two of the 1.5 liter versions. Same exact coffee beans as before will be less bitter than hot or iced coffee. Modifications I make for cold brewing:
  • normally I drink medium roast coffee, but I prefer dark roast coffee for cold brewing. Cold brewing doesn't get as much flavor out of the beans as my SCA certified Technivorm Moccamaster so I compensate with a bolder roast.
  • I normally grind my beans fine (Baratza Virtuoso setting is 14) for hot coffee, but I open it up to a coarse setting of 30 or 32 for cold brew. This drastically cuts the solids getting out of the cold brewer's strainer basket into the coffee.

    I think a cold brewer with coarse ground coffee will tick all of boxes:
  • No coffee brewing smell
  • Quick and easy in the morning
  • Outstanding taste
  • More caffeine (cold brewing is more efficient for caffeine extraction).

    Week days, I drink 300 ml (~10 fl oz) of cold brew every morning so the 1.5L carafe lasts a work week. BTW, if I neglect to start the cold brew on Sunday my back-up store bought cold brew is Stok Un-Sweet.

    Cold Brew coffee is great, I buy it premade at the grocery store, before you invest in making it yourself, pick up a couple of different brands and try them out.

    Some of the offerings here:

    Dunkin Donuts
    Califia
    Stok
    Starbucks
    Colombe

    Stock and Colombe seem to be the smoothest, Califia the strongest. They have dark and mild blends as well.

    Be a good place to start, see what your palate prefers and then get into MYO...

    I've made coffee at night previously. Tossed a bunch in the fridge. So I've got cold coffee in the AM. But I freaking forget to do it.

    Even bought a case of the canned Black Rifle Coffee from the shop down the street. But it's pretty pricy @ like $40-$50 for a dozen cans.

  • Tatertodd is correct… Large grinds work better.

    I normally brew hot coffee fresh every morning, but I always keep a jug of homemade cold brew concentrate in the fridge for times when I'm short on time, or for when I need caffeine but don't want a hot beverage (like in the afternoons during the summer).

    Fill the central filter with coarse ground coffee, and install it in the lid. Fill the jug with cold water. Put the lid on the jug to immerse the grounds. Shake vigorously, then put it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, take out the central filter and put the filterless lid back on the jug. You now have a quart of cold brew concentrate sitting in the fridge ready to go when needed over the next few days.

    1 Quart is fine for people like me, who only use smaller amounts of cold brew to supplement their usual freshly brewed hot coffee. But if you're wanting to make and drink a lot of cold brew exclusively, you'll likely want the larger 2 quart model (or more than one).

    The wife and I caught it last summer. My smeller was affected in a big way. Couldn’t smell the lumber framed in our house being built, should have been very strong. Over the course of a year I would say it has seemingly all returned.

    Jot is pretty good. It’s a liquid concentrate. You add 1 tablespoon of concentrate to 8 oz of water. You get pretty decent-tasting coffee.

    It’s not as good as really good fresh-brewed coffee, but it’s a hell of a lot better than freeze-dried instant.

    I’m not a super fan of Keurig, but Barista Joe’s coffee is decent. They have developed cold-brew pods that are good as well. If I buy one of the store brands of cold brew, it gets evicted from the fridge when space is needed for other items.
