And how do they work? I feel an old timer/non-techy dummy.

It just occurred to me today that it would be nice to have some low volume music playing while I'm out getting my exercise. Would it be a problem to run them while using an exercise GPS type app?

Any particular brands to look at? I have an iPhone 13.

If you’ve got a 13, it should have included earbuds in the box. I’d suggest you try it that way before spending money to buy Bluetooth buds, since that’ll just be wasted money if you end up hating the experience.

Anything you listen to with the wired earbuds will be pretty much the same with Bluetooth earbuds.

Beyond that, I can’t recommend anything specific, as I’ve only ever used Apple earbuds. I’ve had the base model AirPods and the AirPod Pros. The transparent listening mode on the Pros are very nice and would be good for cycling so you could still hear your surroundings.

To keep awareness, consider something like Shokz? Bone conducting or at least open ear model?

They will improve your run immensely. I can't do any exercise or outdoor activity without them any more.

I have tried many different cheap brands, mid level brands and one high level brand. They mostly sound the same, but battery level and features it what really stand out.

My current favorite pair is the jbl tour pro 3. They sound great, fit really well and the battery lasts about 6-7 hours, I've not gotten to the end of them yet. They are pricey, but worth it in my opinion. They are noise cancelling and have a mode called ambient aware, that blocks noise, but allows you hear your surroundings for SA. Buy once, cry once. I would recommend them.

I have the Apple AirPods 3 Pro that I bought mainly for use as hearing aids. They work great and save me tons of money. They run about $200. If you don’t need the hearing aid feature and just want to listen to music, I suppose you can buy other AirPods models for cheaper.

I've been using one of the Shokz models for several years.
They don't block your ears or fall off, the battery lasts all day plus and charges quickly.

I looked where I thought the box would be. No box. But I don't see and place on the phone to plug anything in, besides the charge port.

The Shokz look like they'd stay in place during activity. That's a huge plus and also hearing my surroundings.

The 13 can use either wireless or wired earbuds. The wired Apple earbud cord/cable plugs directly into the charging port.

Apple dropped the phone jack since the iPhone 7. However, in the box should have been included a "Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter". (However, as already mentioned the Earpods included with your 13 should already have a Lightning connector.)

I’ve owned Samsung’s Buds + for several years and they’re still working like a charm. I have an iPhone 12 and no compatibility issues. Love them.

We had terrible luck with several iPods the quit just after a couple of months. 3 sets dove into the trash can. No more.

Got my wife a newer set of Samsungs. She, the Ape eco system lover, now loves hers.

No other reliable choices down here, too many chinese copies pretending to be the real thing.

I like some with some kind of retention. Regular ear buds don't stay in my ears.

My current pair are V90, but I forget the brand. Last ones were MPow MDots
Both hold in my ear well, the V90 during a run as well, and have about 7-8 hrs battery life.

The case on the V90 has a battery & charges the earbuds, the MDots had to be plugged in to charge.

Apple AirPods 3, they have all the trimmings as far as options, right now they are $249 at Costco and that includes Apple Care which is a good deal. If you watch they drop them on sale quite often A week ago they were $199.

The AirPod 3 Pros have active noise cancellation, transparency mode, Live Translation in case you bike across the border into Mexico or Canada eh!! They also work as basic level hearing aids if you need that.

I'm right there with ya. I like the AirPods... when I'm at my desk, or maybe when around the house. There's no way I'll use them outdoors -- scared to death of dropping and losing one (or both) "out there."

To that end, my go-to for being active (running, biking, mowing the grass) is this wireless but connected-to-each-other set (unfortunately discontinued now). The rubber "loop" helps hold them in the ears well, and the cord assures me I'm not going to drop one. (Dropped an AirPod in the snow? Good luck!)

I've been wanting to try the bone-conduction headphones like these Shokz at Amazon, but haven't put forth the money yet.

I liked that you could pull one out & drop it without worrying about losing it. They were magnetic, too, so you could pull both & they'd stick together.

Interesting. Having precisely zero experience with such things, are they stand-alone or must they be paired to an I-phone or other Apple device?

Mrs. PHPaul would benefit immensely from hearing aids, but the budget won't support a top-drawer device.

After trying lot of different styles, I finally ended up with a pair from Amazon that I love Mipeace around the neck earplug headphones, I can mow the yard and listen, something I could not do with all the other earbuds. plus if they fall out of your ear which I have not had a problem with they are still around your neck.

^^^ That style and the Shokz sound appealing to me because they'll mostly stay in place.
