I had heard this about 'sides' for years. I tried it for years. It always hurt and never improved. After much discussion, frustration, & consultation with a variety of diabetic educators, I resorted to using the less sensitive portion of my finger pads, approximately in a crescent shape around the center & outer shoulder of the pad as it wraps around to the side.
