Let's say someone that I know was using an impact wrench to get a mower part off which turned the part into a spinning piece of sheet metal. This unnamed person is glad the wrench was set to medium impact instead of full impact or he'd be typing without a left thumb right now.

Regardless, I ... er, he had a bit of trouble stopping the bleeding. Eventually, direct pressure and a tight covering stopped the flow but if it hadn't I had superglue at the ready but honestly don't know how to use it in this case. So my question is do I squirt the glue into the wound and then pinch it closed or do I pinch it closed and cover it with the glue? Glue in the wound sounds like it would sting pretty well, not that smashing a hole in your thumb doesn't hurt already but, you know what I mean.

What's the proper application in this case?

One might find some Youtube videos applying Dermabond interesting in that scenario - or just go to the hospital and ask would be the safest bet if more than a scratch.

I always pinch it closed and apply the glue.

I carry around superglue in my truck and tool box for this reason. Very handy.

Linky on Sticky Glue

This will only work for cuts up to an inch deep; any deeper may mean that you've injured more than just skin and it truly should be looked at. Don't use this method on cuts wider than an inch. It is not feasible to think that you can squeeze together a cut of that width.

If you accidentally cut yourself and don't have access to band aids, gauze or even a butterfly kit, look for some super glue. You can use super glue for cuts in a pinch so that the wound heals and doesn't get infected. This is a permanent fix for cuts that are less than an inch deep and an inch wide. Using super glue on these kind of cuts will keep you out of the doctor's offices as well.

Stop the blood for the most part. Take a rag, paper towel, extra napkins, your shirt or whatever you have. Apply direct pressure to the area and if possible raise that part of your body above your chest. Apply the type of pressure you'd apply to a thumb tack when you're putting it into a wall.

Once the blood slows significantly, you're ready to close the wound. If you have the water, now would be a good time to use it. Pour the water over the open cut as this will clean it. If you don't have any, that's OK also. Squeeze the two sides of the cut together.

While holding both sides of the cut, add a small bead of super glue down the entire length of the cut. Hold cut closed for 3 minutes while the glue dries. If there was excess blood, repeat the process. The glue will stop most of the bleeding and it will close most cuts needing stitches.

This. If the cut is close to the joint it may not hold though. I learned this the hard way.

Regarding super glue for wounds, I have used it personally to good effect on minor cuts. I have seen someone who used it to good effect on a GSW to the neck. Bullet struck nothing of great importance. Although, I would have said a brain hit on this fellow would also strike nothing important. I digress.

One of my Cavalry Troopers broke a tooth. We were not at home base and he didn't want to return there. I cleaned and dried the tooth, applied some Army issued Super Glue and he placed the tooth back in place. After returning to Fort Campbell, the dentist said that was the thing to do. Army good ingenuity.

So what did the dentist do? Did he put a crown on it? Did he extract it?

Butterfly bandages over the cut after applying the glue helps keep it together.

I have also used zip-stitch before with glue...

The glue and zip stitch are nice to keep in bug out bags or med kits in vehicles.

The follow up treatment would depend on how deep the fracture went. If it broke at the gumline, generally ext>implant. If just the edge of an incisor, a composite repair can sometimes be done. In either case, the Super Glue is temporary as it is somewhat water soluble. It WILL come off.

For some reason it seems like I remember from my past that "super glue" was developed and used by the military as a quick field expediant way to help with closing of "Some" wounds while in a battlefield and proper care was not available . ................drill sgt.

I always try to close up the cut and make it look like it did before the cut. The bigger the gap, the more scar tissue you'll have.

We use surgical glue (sterilized version, of course) routinely to close the final layers of skin on veterinary patients. My advice is, if you plan to use superglue at all, I would only use it after thoroughly cleaning and DRYING the cut, pushing the sides of the incision together, put it ON (not IN) the cut while it's held closed. Hold it for several seconds, and if it doesn't hold, it is likely not going to. It'll do in a pinch for more minor cuts, but can't really hold over high motion areas (joints, stretch points of skin, etc).

I cut the shit out of my hand cutting a roll with an outback steak knife.
At hospital surgeon showed the proper method for super glue, clean as best as you can, stop bleeding, try a quick clean again now that the blood isn't flowing so fast, stop bleeding a second time and hold together and glue, putting glue directly into the wound will likely slow healing.

hope you feel better
