Massachusetts this week mandated that all students ages 6 months and older receive the flu vaccine this year, in what state public health officials called “an important step to reduce flu-related illness and the overall impact of respiratory illness during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The requirement applies to all children 6 months of age or older who are attending child care, preschool or kindergarten in the Bay State, as well as K-12 students and those who are enrolled in Massachusetts’ various colleges and universities, including any international students. All students must be vaccinated by Dec. 31, state public health officials said in a news release.

“Every year, thousands of people of all ages are affected by influenza, leading to many hospitalizations and deaths,” Dr. Larry Madoff, the medical director of the department’s Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences, said in a statement. “It is more important now than ever to get a flu vaccine because flu symptoms are very similar to those of COVID-19 and preventing the flu will save lives and preserve healthcare resources.”

There are some exemptions to the mandate, however, such as for medical or religious reasons.

“Also exempted are K-12 students who are homeschooled and higher education students who are completely off-campus and engaged in remote learning only,” per the release.

Some college and university students are also excused, though only if they “exclusively attend classes online and never visit campus in person.” But if any of those students attend a class or activity on campus — even once, officials warned — they must also be vaccinated by the end of the year.

“This new flu immunization requirement to enter school in January comes in addition to existing vaccine requirements for all those attending child care, preschool, K-12, and colleges and universities in Massachusetts. Elementary and secondary students in districts and schools that are using a remote education model are not exempt,” officials added.

A second dose of the flu vaccine may be recommended for some children “depending on the child’s age and flu vaccination history,” but “the second dose is not required for school entry,” per the release.

I'm not an anti-vaxxer, but I don't like the government mandating that I put something into mine or my child's body.

In order to easily discern who has been vaxed and who has not, it would be a good idea to have some sort of semi-permanent mark applied somewhere visible like the back of the hand or the forehead. Voluntary compliance might be an issue, but if it were required in order to shop or work most people would go along.

Just thinking out loud. Razz

You are onto something. I think everyone not vaxxed should have to wear some sort of star on their clothing.

Near 45% effective last year. That doesn’t seem like a number to get real excited about.

hMMM.... where did I read about this? Oh yeah, some religious book called the bible. No way do i every get a "mandatory" vaccine. Not a chance in hell do I do that.

“Our actions may be impeded...
But there can be no impeding our intentions or our dispositions. Because we can accommodate and adapt. The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting.

The impeding to action advances action.

What stands in the way becomes the way.”

This will never end, it'll expand into all aspects of our life and it'll become more arbitrary. If the sheep are that gullible why stop?

If it saves 1 life.......

Public schools have required vaccinations for a long, long time. We had to dig out the CA vaccination records for our kids when we moved to NC before they could go to public school 13 years ago.

Nothing new here, other than adding flu to the mix.

The deal has always been that you get your kids educated/indoctrinated (pick any two) and (at least in the old days of in-person classwork) baby-sat, and it's all for free paid for by taxpayers. Part of the 'price' for this free subsidized service is to reduce the crud they may bring to the sessions by getting preventable, communicable stuff taken off the table before Junior goes and mingles with the group.

No issue whatsoever with this. It has the usual exceptions (religious and/or health and/or homeschoolers).

I used to be ok with this. I am no longer ok with this.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I get my flu vaccine every year/. I always avoid the thread here about it. My kids get it. My wife is a pediatrician. We own a pediatric practice together. We recommend all our patients get it.

All that said.

FUCK. THIS. SHIT.

I am so tired of government overreach. I’m so tired of these progressive assholes thinking they know what’s better for everyone.

FUCK THEM

I need to get the fuck out of Virginia. We are sitting on the precipice of this chasm that New York, and California, and fucking Massachusetts, etc have already fallen into. What Northam and his goons have begun, it looks like our old buddy Terry McAuliffe is going to finish.

Motherfuckers. God. This makes me so angry. Fuck

And now the lovely director of health in my wonderful commonwealth (not to be confused with MA) has said he will mandate all Virginians receive the coronavirus vaccine.

Fuck him

It would be interesting to see how the statistics work out on a large scale program like that.
I'm just glad I'm not one of the guinea pigs involved.
The safety and effectiveness would also vary by year based on the exact vaccine and flu strain that year.
