Evening!

Update to the necro-thread below!

This fall, I will be PCSing to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. My wife and I will likely be settling somewhere in the greater Kansas City area to maximize her employment opportunities. I wanted to jump in and ask about shooting ranges in the local area.

I'm currently a member at the local Shoot Point Blank franchise out here. Modern facilities, big rental counter, powered target carriers, well lit, etc.; this is probably my wife's preferred shooting experience. Unfortunately, I cannot draw from the holster at that franchise currently.

I'm also a member at a local conservation club that amounts to having a private outdoor range available. Here I can do pretty much anything I want (within reason and safety constraints, obviously), to include drawing from the holster, target transitions, etc.; I can go out to 100 yards but anything beyond 25 has to be supported.

I've been to some clubs that have shoot boxes, and I would love to find a facility like that near Leavenworth. I've shot a couple of USPSA matches locally and really enjoyed it, but know for a fact that I need somewhere to practice if I want to actually get good at that style of competition.

Are there any members on here that have experience with ranges and clubs in the Kansas City/Fort Leavenworth area that can give me some leads?

And of course, any other area advice would be appreciated!

Welcome! Smile

I can recommend one range that sounds very similar to what you've been used to there locally - Centerfire Shooting Sports in Olathe KS. It's a bit south of Levenworth though, not sure where you're going to end up. In the KC metro, a lot depends on which side of the state line you're on. Smile
Oh, and get ready for some AWESOME BARBECUE! Cool

You doing GCSC? If so, don't worry about shooting, you'll be too busy reading and writing papers. :-)

just kidding, it'll be the best year of your life.

I'm there now. there is a free range on post, 25 yards, two lanes, you self RSO. It's closed right now due to COVID. You aren;t supposed to shoot from holster. But, they provide steel targets.

I shoot at frontier justice, right next to cabellas in Kansas City. It's closed right now due to Covid too, but it's one of the cleanest and nicest indoor ranges I've shot on. They offer classes that include drawing, etc, but don't allow it during normal range use. If you are going to shoot regularly, get a monthly membership.

Chuck Haggard is in the state as well, if you are looking for good instrucuton.

Reviving the necro-thread!

I didn't come back to this for a while since buying and selling houses, moving, etc during the covidpocalypse was an ordeal and a half. Given the quarantines and lack of ammo I've not been shooting much, but I'm looking forward to getting back into it here in a couple of months.

We wound up in Kearney, MO, northwest of the city - to answer CD228, nah, not at CGSC, I'm permanent party for the next 1-3 years. I thought we had lucked out, as when we bought the house there was a small shooting range less than five minutes from my front door - but sadly, they did not survive the covidpocalypse and are advertised as Permanently Closed.

Olathe is a bit of a drive but Centerfire Shooting Sports looks like exactly what I've been hunting for in terms of an indoor range. I've been to the Frontier Justice on my side of town and it's perfect except for the prohibition on draws from the holster.

Are there any private clubs, 2 gun events, action challenge shooting ranges in that north, northeast, east side fan of the city? Back in Indiana I had access to a range where I could do things like multiple target drills, LE qualification drills, et cetera, and I really enjoyed the more dynamic sort of shooting.

^^^^^ If that nearby range that closed due to COVID is a pretty nice one, I'd be surprised if someone didn't buy it and reopen it when the crisis is past. Good shooting ranges are hard to find.

Rob 1st I have to say thank you for wearing the uniform and serving our country. Since I have no knowledge of what FT. Leonardwood is like now but hope all goes well with your PSC both for you as well as for the wife. Without our families support it make your job that much harder. ........................................................................ drill sgt.

If you're going to be in the area for awhile check out Pioneer Gun Club = https://www.pioneergunclub.org/

It's private, but if you can get a membership there is both a large outdoor range with all sorts of things and a separate 24/7 access indoor range. There are also other options. There is a pretty solid shooting community around here. I mostly know the USPSA guys (lot of GMs around here) but quite a few others as well.

There are other private clubs around here, but Pioneer is going to be the closest to you.

I'm headed to Leavenworth in a few months to serve my 10 month sentence. Good to know there are a few places to shoot at, maybe they will be open by the time I get there.

FWIW there is a very active IDPA/competition culture in the vicinity of Kansas City. Also, GT distributors has a shop in overland park, It's a bit of a drive from post, but you can get a good deal on SIG P320 Pros, I purchased two there. Their used section used to be pretty good too. There are also a couple big names in the firearms industry in the area. I want to say CZ and Sierra are in the area. I didn't get to visit them due to COVID.
