Killer earthquakes in Venezuela
Scary.

“Harrowing footage has revealed the extent of the damage and chaos inflicted on Venezuela by a pair of massive earthquakes last night.

The back-to-back 7.1 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck near the coast, sending terrified residents racing out from swaying apartment blocks as walls collapsed and clouds of dust rose over the capital.

'High casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread,' the US Geological Survey said, 'with an initial death toll estimate likely between 10,000 and 100,000.'

The quakes are among the strongest to strike Venezuela in more than a century, although strong earthquakes are unusual in the country. …”

Devastating damage, there will be quite a few people lost in the aftermath of the quakes.

Us is sending two USAR teams, VA-1 out of Fairfax county and CTF-1 (?) out of Los Angles county for earthquake response and recovery. They typically run a 14-21 day cycle and then rotate out with new teams coming into sustains operations. For however long it is required.

Venezuela, N. California, Iwate Japan, Aleutian Islands, Papua New Guinea, that is a lot of activity in 24 hrs in a ring around the pacific.

When they say back to back it was a 7.2 followed only 39 seconds later by 7.5. This is not good.

Yes, there was a lot of activity. Venezuela is not in the ring of fire tho.

According to USGS, all the quaking this week are all from different tectonic plate movements and unrelated, and the timing is just coincidence.

Also, there's no such thing as UFOs.

There certainly are UFOs. But probably none are piloted by intelligent space aliens. Smile

Anything above 5.5 is an attention getter.
Above 6 depending upon your surrounding you're in for a ride.
Above 7 now shit gets serious and damage at some level is likely. Sadly the corruption of under Chavez and Maduro hollowed-out Venezuela in many ways, now with this catastrophe the misery will only worsen.

What is not being shown is the damage to smaller towns in the earthquake circle of destruction. Villages are normally not subject to quake proof construction! I am seriously concerned about damage and deaths in the hinterland.

There is a growing body of published science linking solar storms with earthquakes. The electrical energy hits the upper atmosphere and gets channeled into the earth. There was a modest solar impact a day before the earthquakes.

As the earth's magnetic field weakens, the impact of a given size of solar event increases. The field has weakened quite a lot over the past few decades.

Though it has not been proven as absolute causation, the literature shows correlation.

But one of many published studies:

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-67860-3

There is a "Global Electric Circuit" where electrical energy flows from the upper atmosphere into the crust, fueled by solar particles. It is complex, involving other factors as well such as what is under the surface that increasingly we don't seem to understand as well as we used to think we did.

The weakening of the earth's magnetic field over the last 100+ years, and increasingly so each decade, is substantial and well documented.

Is solar activity definitively causing earthquakes? Probably but it isn't thoroughly proven how necessary it is, nor can it yet predict specific locations of earthquakes.

It would seem that construction methods in Venezuela were short-cutter by the socialist regime over the last quarter century by using styrofoam blocks instead of concrete. More at link.

https://www.dailymail.com/news...ideo-death-toll.html

Rescuers sifting through rubble left by collapsed buildings in Venezuela recorded a video showing that the structures were built with what appears to be Styrofoam.

A later article, with more photos, about this tragic quake:

“Strong aftershocks have struck Venezuela's capital as rescuers continue to search for tens of thousands of civilians who are still missing in the aftermath of two violent earthquakes. …”

I'd be interested in more details on this. From what I've read these failed buildings used Styrofoam blocks instead of standard structural blocks or a legitimate construction technique such as ICF (insulated concrete forms). I realize they're in the search and rescue mode which takes priority over root cause failure and accuracy of construction details.

I had an older friend who has since passed away. He spent 30 years as a missionary to Venezuela and had fascinating stories. One of the stories he shared was when a college professor come down on a short-term mission project that involved concrete buildings. He was a civil engineer specializing in concrete, and everyone was pretty excited to have his expertise. However, the professor tried to reason with the locals to no avail on their proposed concrete mix ratio as he deemed it unsafe. When the locals refused to change because the safe mixture cost too much, the college professor said he wouldn't be part of the project and left.
