I'm pretty sure that the 2016 version is the latest (most current) that will run on OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

Later versions of QuickBooks for Mac require OS X Sierra or later, I want to stick with El Capitan because I would have to update too many other apps if I moved to a later version of OS X.

Does anybody have QB version 2016, and no longer using it? Maybe you have upgraded to a later version?

Can't help you with QB, but there is at least one alternative, MoneyDance. I find it clearly superior to Quicken.

Just about anything is better than Quicken. Wink

MoneyDance and Quicken are personal finance managers.

QuickBooks is a business-oriented bookkeeping system that does invoicing, tracks payables & receivables, issues purchase orders, has payroll features, etc. That's what I need.

I am currently using an older Windows version of QuickBooks, but since I'm a Mac user, it's a multi-step process for me. Start VMware Fusion, boot Windows, start QuickBooks.

The Mac version of QuickBooks would simplify things for me, and lessen my need for Windows.

I’d love to help you out, but I’m using my copy. Will Intuit no longer sell you a license key for QB2016?

If I remember correctly, QB full install no longer functioned in the Mac OS after El Capitan (2015). I'm sure to be corrected. I think that 2016 was the year I deleted QB and went to their online version because of this. And their online version is OK, but not great.

You can use QB online. Information is all housed in the cloud. That is what they are all migrating to.

sigcrazy7: Nope, Intuit will not sell the 2016 version, now that the 2019 version has been released. The 2019 version requires OS X Sierra or newer. For various reasons, I want to stick with El Capitan.
Siglicious: I have confirmed that the 2016 version is compatible with El Capitan. That's why I am specifically looking for the 2016 release.
sig77: No, I will not use the online version. I absolutely refuse to put my business banking data, credit card information, etc., on Quicken's servers. That environment has to be a really juicy target for hackers!

Even if I were willing to use the online version it would not work for me. I can not, will not, put myself in a position where my ability to get things done depends on availability of an internet resource. Too many things can interrupt an internet connection. I need a self-contained solution.

The desktop version usually costs two hundred or less (street price, not Intuit's MSRP). Buy it, pay once, and you own it. The online version (which, as I stated, I am not willing to use) is not something that you buy and you own; you "rent" access to it for a monthly fee. One year's rent is much more than the cost of the installable product.

You really just need someone's registration number and product number, yeah? Then you can download QB2016 and activate it. Surely someone has their old, no longer used registration info....

Do you know of a site that has this available for download? I have not been able to find one, and I would really like to download a copy.

QuickBooks products usually have a thirty day period when they after installation, allowing you to give them a thorough evaluation. After the thirty days they will stop working until they are registered with a license / activation key.

I would really appreciate it if you could tell me where to find a source for downloading this.

It would have been Intuit when version 2016 was the "current" version, but now that 2019 is available it is my understanding that 2016 is not available from Intuit for downloading except to "repair" an installation if you already have a registration / activation key.

There are several 2016 MAC versions for sale on EBAY. I'd order it from there or Amazon.

Cool! Thank you!

I was able to download the 2016 version. The trial allows 15 uses before registration is required, to continue.

I have heard that the Mac version is not as "complete" as the Windows version, but my needs are fairly straightforward. If the Mac version does everything that I need, during the trial period, I'll go in search of a registration key to buy.

Thanks for the link!

I might have missed something, but every one that I saw on Amazon was "currently not available."

Yeah, there are some on ebay, but based on past experience I'm a little bit leery about buying software on ebay, especially at a couple hundred bucks. It might turn out that this is the only source. I'm going to work with the trial version that kkina pointed me to, and then decide whether to take a chance on ebay.

V-Tail, there’s nothing holding me on 2016. I’m running High Sierra. If you cannot find a license, you could get 2019 and we could trade keys. Or you are welcome to my copy of 2012. For what I do, there’s no difference between 2012,2016, or 2019. I don’t do payroll or online banking in QuickBooks.

Do you know whether 2012 will run with El Capitan? I did a search for system requirements, but the search leads me down rabbit holes that go nowhere relevant.

UPDATE: Instead of searching for the answer, I just used the link that kkina supplied, and downloaded a copy of 2012. It seems to run fine, so all I need to convert from "trial" mode to actual production, would be the License Number and Product Number:

You'll find the License and Product numbers on a sticker with the QuickBooks CD. If you downloaded QuickBooks, the License and Product numbers are in your confirmation e-mail.
Probably better not to put these on the forum where they can be read by anybody, even a non-member.

My email address is in my profile.

I’m out on the road, and will be available next week. I’ll see if I can find the license in my archive, but I know I’ve got it printed out at home. I should be back to Utah by Tues.

IIRC, I was running it on El Cap. I used it forever under Yosemite.

Thank you! I did receive the email, I am out in the truck today, re-supplying customers.

I'll try it when I get back home tonight, or tomorrow.
