Wifey is trying to get me to go on a cruise. Words cannot describe how badly I do not want to do this.

I was thinking that getting up every morning, sitting on the balcony with my coffee and cigar sounded kind of nice though.

Nope. No more smoking on cruise line balconies and violators are subject to a $250 cleaning fee.

So here is my so far unanswerable question....

Is that $250 each day some busy-body turns you in, or is that $250 for the trip? Because if it is the latter, I'll write that check ahead of time. LOL

There is a collection of articles on Norovirus. There is the cruise ship that flooded last week, and of course the mysterious people who fall overboard and are never found again. Start with that. Several stories of ships stuck in heavy seas and passengers puking their guts out. I do not see any piracy stories as of yet.

Her dopey pain-in-the-ass sister is having a “destination” 20th wedding anniversary party.

You’ll see that topic in the “rant” area later tonight, LOL.

I think you will find this is the policy on all of them.

Maybe someone with more of a marine background will show up on this thread, but I'm under the impression that there was some logical safety reason for this rule.

My bride has tried repeatedly to hold me hostage on a cruise ship. So far, without success. I've been accused of not liking "people".

It's not "people"-it's "people who would go on a cruise". Like my in-laws.

Apparently you can smoke in the casino if you are actively gambling. I guess that could mean feeding a coin into a slot machine every twenty minutes or so.

Here's a link:

Cruise Line Smoking Policies

Has policies of each major cruise line.
I'm betting you can find a cigar aficionado cruise somewhere.

My only real interest/question is the balcony policy. Do they fine you by the day, or for the week?

I also would imagine it’s per occurrence

I went on a Norwegian cruise the week before Easter

I’ve been on a cruise several times. I think they are perfect for what they are supposed to be

For me, with kids 16, 12 and 6 there is something for all 3 that removes kid entertainment from my responsibility and lets me focus on spending time doing things my wife and I want to

Maybe I’m an anomaly, but I’ve never had anything more than minor inconvenience on the ships

Plus, for an old soldier, I love being at sea

There is a sound safety reason for this rule. Probably the worst thing that can happen on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean is a fire. Smoking on a balcony is not fully under surveillance and it is possible (has happened) that sparks or carelessly discarded material can start a fire where it is not immediately discovered.

We went on the Norwegian Dawn A few weeks ago. I'm a cigar fan but didn’t smoke on this trip. There were 2 - 3 legal places to smoke on the boat if I recall correctly.
I too wish I could have smoked on the balcony but it's just not safe based on how the wind swirls around the boat.
We’d do Norwegian again in two seconds. Great food, clean boat, professional staff and great venues.

Me, personally, the Cruise Director would know EVERY TIME I had to put up with the smoke blowing next door into MY balcony and cabin.

Surely there are venues on a cruise ship where you're allowed to smoke, maybe even a cigar lounge?

Fortunately, my wife likes people she has no control over being with even less than I do so I'm in no danger. Big Grin

I was on a Norwegian cruise a few weeks ago. Plenty of people were smoking on the pool/sun decks and in the casino. They also had a dedicated cigar lounge.
