Like a guy visiting a prostitute to get laid, who gets laid and then wails "What have I done?!"

What you did, Bob, was to get the best pussy the US gov't could buy for you, and there is no way you didn't know what was going to happen when you blew your wad.

Oppenheimer is not a sympathetic character. While certainly exceptional as a scientist, when you get right down to it, ol' Bob was just your typical hypocritical commie. His "morality" kicked in only after he had his fun little party on Uncle Sam's dime.

<slow clap> Cuts right to TRUTH of it, through any attempt at obfuscation.

Shipped technology/materials and scientists to Wright-Patterson AFB, many of which worked for Air Force Research Lab including Werner Von Braun. Here's a NASA link discussing his work for the U.S.

I'd say "good, I'm glad". But perhaps we'd all have been better off if they'd have just pulled the trigger at that moment. I suppose not. In the end, I believe Zuckerberg and his ilk, and their army of evil data scientists will bring our end before Oppenheimer's weapons do.

Brother against brother, divided and conquered. Hope I'm wrong.

As we’re discussing two different subjects, it’s important to understand that captured German scientists had nothing to do with the development of nuclear weapons by the US and Britain. The Germans were working independently toward that goal during the war, but despite sensational fictional accounts to the contrary, they never progressed beyond the earliest basic research stages.

A good book about all that is Heisenberg’s War: The Secret History Of The German Bomb by Thomas Powers.

“Most men … can seldom accept the simplest and most obvious truth if it … would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions … which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabrics of their lives.”

He should have done very well on his polygraph test. Doubt any question elicited so much as a wiggle on the machine!

Just because you can,
doesn't mean you should

The German scientists are lucky they had such skills and we needed them.
Otherwise many would have ended their careers at the end of a rope in the later 1940's for their own war crimes using slave labor, etc.
