Uh, aren't Robins supposed to show up in the Spring?

Clearly, someone didn't get the memo. I have a pair of Ornamental Bamboos in front of the house and for the last three days I have had this little one coming by to feed on the berries produced by the Bamboo, he (she?) has been here a lot today, really chowing down on the little red morsels. I am glad that I can provide a source of nutrition. Me likey Robins, they are one of my favorite members of the avian world.

I’ve noticed them here in Long Island for the last month.
Had my fingers crossed for an early spring.

I started seeing them about a week ago here in Central VA and believe it or not, I heard spring peepers last night during our downpour. Mother nature is being a bit weird right now

A friend that does bird rescue and rehab said most robins migrate south for the winter but a few stick around.

1st week of January I saw 2 eastern blue birds. Don't see to many of them, let alone 1st week of January. A few days later, saw 4 robins.

It's 8° now, and dropping. I bet they wished that they stayed south an extra week or two!

This is supposed to be the oldest nursery rhyme in the English language, from 1744:

Little Robin Red breast,
Sitting on a pole,
Nidde, Noddle, Went his head.
And poop went his Hole.

I guess it's about bedtime... Smile

I've been seeing them for close to a month here just north of Baton Rouge.
Had plenty of them in the yard the last couple days. We have had temps in the teens and 20's with ice, some snow and freezing rain.

Too damn cold for Louisiana

Before this winter storm here in the Texas Hill Country, they were coming through by the bagillions! They were everywhere - ground, trees and they sky. I don't ever remember seeing as many in my life as this year. I notice this stuff since one of my biggest hobbies is birding. They are still here in this cold and snowy weather, but not nearly as many as before the cold snap.

This has been an interesting winter for birdwatching here in SC. My yard has had the largest flocks of robins I have ever seen. To go along with the robins, last week, I opened the back door and saw the ground covered with blue jays. I typically see those by themselves or maybe a pair. To see and hear hundreds at one time was an interesting sight.

7 degrees outside now. While we had some yesterday, I'll have to wonder if they'll make it. Probably I guess.

Fact: Not all robins migrate. Some, even in the northeast, will stay for the winter.
