And it starts.... what's next....

After pot's success, could Denver legalize mushrooms next?

DENVER – Colorado blazed trails when it legalized pot and now Denver could lead the way decriminalizing magic mushrooms.

The group Denver for Psilocybin may soon have the all-clear to start gathering signatures so you can vote on it this fall.

Gathering at the steps of the Denver City and County building on Wednesday, the group — chanting at times, "free the spores!" — met with city leaders about their push to decriminalize psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms.

Decriminalization would mean reducing the penalty for possession of psilocybin mushrooms. Colorado decriminalized marijuana long before the drug became legal for medicinal or recreational use.

Tyler Williams, one of the leaders of Denver for Psilocybin, spoke to Denver7 about their reasoning behind the push.

"There's a lot of research for all sorts of mental health issues. Everything from anxiety to depression to cluster headaches, addiction," said Williams.

But he doesn't need the research to prove his claims. He credits their use saved his life a few years ago.

"I had a suicide attempt November 12th of 2015 and I think it helped me get out of my depression, and it's helped me with my PTSD," Williams said.

He's not alone. There are a growing number of people turning to psilocybin.

Licensed professional counselor Kathy Hawkins treats a few number of people, not during their use, but only before and after.

"So, I’m a place where they can come and talk about it. So they can make sure they’re being safe about how they’re using, what they're using, why they’re using," said Hawkins.

LSD and shrooms were big in the 60's. There was even research to study the effects of the psychedelic compound, but then the government labeled it a Schedule 1 drug; illegal because of its negative physical and psychological effects.

However, many point to a study of cancer patients at Johns Hopkins, who experienced a year-long of positive effect from mushrooms.

"They’re so desperate for help, they’re willing to try. So they've had big breakthroughs, relief from trauma, from anxiety, from depression so anything that's going to help. I think is worth investigating," said Hawkins.

I'm no expert on the subject, but from what I've seen, I absolutely think psilocybin, LSD and the like should be legal to use for legit research, and treatment if the research shows it to be effective.

There seems to be good reason to hope psilocybin can have a really positive, lasting impact on certain conditions. Neuroscientists have been able to record actual lasting changes in brain function, sometimes after just one treatment.

USA spends anywhere from $36 to $55 billion dollars a year on the "Drug War" Portugal, about 15 years ago, decriminalized possession/purchase (only, not trafficking or sale)of all drugs and the results are very interesting. They treat it as a health issue, not a criminal issue and they don't spend anywhere near what the US spends, and their addiction rates did not increase (may have actually decreased).

I guess this is why marijuana is a gateway drug...apparently it was a gateway law, too.

And this is why drugs will never be legalized.

The amount of money involved at every level of that drug war is staggering. Nobody-not the criminals, not the government, not the thousands of private businesses that have direct or indirect involvement with the drug issue are going to willingly give up their piece of that oh, so lucrative pie.

War is big business. This war no less so.

I really doubt the psychedelics, and especially the natural ones, are problem drugs.

I am a real libertarian on drug laws, but even if you aren't, I just don't see a lot of problems arising from mushroom or peyote users.

Of course there is a big gap between "legalization for sale to the public" and "legal for legitimate academic research".

I don't really oppose making anything legal for legitimate research; but that is not what most "legalization" bills are about.

It is like the bait-and-switch that is used on immigration. Start opposing ILLEGAL immigration, and liberals start talking about the contributions of "immigrants".

Start opposing mass legalization of any drug, and suddenly they are talking about "The potential medical benefits".

I don't have a problem with this.

Treat adults like adults and let them do what they want with their bodies? What a concept!

We live in a dangerous world, no legislation will ever change that. The more people realize this, the less momentum politicians will have when they want to take our rights away.
