Only saw them once - they set up and played a set on top of Turret 3 while we were anchored in NYC Harbor for the International Naval Review, July 4, 1986.

100th anniversary of Statue of Liberty, and we carried President and Mrs Reagan down the Hudson before anchoring.

SECNAV and ~1500 of his guests on board for BBQ and Beach Boys concert, then fireworks.

No shit.

I guess Pet Sounds (easily one of my top 10 favorite records of all time) has terrible vocals and performances that I don't know about.

Never saw the band. Wish I did.

I saw the Beach Boys 2 summers ago and had a very enjoyable night. They sounded good.

I saw them several times from the early 70s to the mid 80s. I'd like to see them again but " I (don't) get around"

Back in the '80's, if a person who had moved to California (not born there) wanted to become a Native, you could run a beach 10k, go to a Beach Boys concert, send in your ticket and race number with $100 and become naturalized, Native Californian, which entitled you to wear a gold necklace and sip chardonnay in public.

I'm a big Beach Boys fan & have seen them three times. Mike Love is the "lead singer" now. I saw Brian Wilson perform a year ago. (Along with Al Jardine) They still put on a great show, but Brian doesn't have the range he used to. I'm 41, at at the last concert my wife and I made a game out of watching the crowd as them came into the auditorium. It was like 10 to 1 on people in wheelchairs to people my age or younger.

Pet Sounds is still a top 3 album of all time, to me. Brian is truly a musical genius.

I saw the same thing when I went to see Prine last fall. I made the comment that there sure was a lot of gray hair in the theater that night. There was a handful of college aged kids there, but for the most part it was 50+.

If you have never seen them then you have never really heard them. Listening to remixed albums and studio recordings is not the same.

The word back then was that the BBs were a studio band, ie, better suited to the recording studio than the concert stage. Musicianship, their style, stage presence, showmanship, etc. Obviously, opinions differed.

Brian Wilson would go into the studio with union musicians and produce the songs. Once the songs were the way he wanted them, he would bring in the rest of the band and show them how he wanted the songs. While Mike Love might have a better voice, the Beach Boys are who they are because of the talent of Brian Wilson.

We saw them last year and with all the new guys they were really good.

Back when I was in high school, we considered getting the Beach Boys for our prom.
We got hold of their manager and he said he would have to check. Well, it seems that Al Jardine is originally from our city where I went to high school. They said for 5k they would do it. We had the money, but the teachers who were advisors nixed the idea, they chose the group. The other group they chose played no rock and roll.

Anyone else remember when Todd Rundgren recorded Good Vibrations. He set out to record a version identical to the Beach Boys version just to prove he could do it. Problem is now no one ever plays it. They play the original.

Also, I'm probably being over-cynical here but to those who think they still sound good, you'd be surprised how many concerts are pre-recorded and lip-synced.

Netflix had a documentary on Brian Wilson 6 months ago or so. They showed him in the studio working. He was very talented and knew exactly what changes he wanted as they tried each song. My brother that has a music store has a huge collection of Brian Wilson bootleg and studio sessions. I think I have heard 30 or more versions of Sloop Jon B. The final version is worded a little different from how it started out. At the start, they have a sort of Jamaican accent that doesn't make it to the final cut. His early music is mono as he couldn't hear out of one of his ears as a result of his father slapping him in his head.

No doubt Brian is/was a very talented guy, none whatsoever.

I am surprised to hear a claim that the released tracks are not played by the Beach Boys themselves but studio musicians.

I've not been into rock and roll much, but this is like saying the Dukes of Dixieland didn't play those songs on the album, we hired other guys for that, but these are the guys in the photos and on the road when you buy a ticket to see them. Most of the time, the liner notes list who played what by name on the track that made it into the album.

There may be a difference in how recordings are made too. On the albums I was on, the entire band was there, we set up, placed the microphones and the whole band played the number. Maybe we did 4, or 5 plays. Then they picked which one they liked best. An engineer could fiddle with the mix, make the sax a little louder, the bass a little softer, but that was it.
