My method: I purchased a subscription to the “Super Grok” app for my iPhone from the Apple App Store. $300/year. I suspect that would enable me to get it for my MacBook too, but I haven’t bothered to find out.

I’ve read that some subscriptions to “X” also provide access to some form of Grok. Possibly true.

Grok is certainly a wonderful tool. Well worth $300/year to me.

I ordered a Tesla Model 3 Premium last July. The current delivery estimate is Oct 17 – Oct 31. Its Premium Connectivity subscription, $100/year, also provides Grok for navigation via spoken commands in conversational English. Perhaps general queries too. I’ll find out when it’s finally delivered.

SuperGrok query:
“How does the $300/year SuperGrok subscription differ from Grok provided by the $84/year X subscription? Provide a text response suitable for copy and paste.”

SuperGrok response:
“SuperGrok ($300/year) vs. Grok access via X Premium ($84/year)
These are two different products from related but separate companies (xAI for SuperGrok; X for Premium). They do not provide the same level of Grok access.

X Premium ($8/month or $84/year)
• Primary focus: X (Twitter) platform features.
• Grok access: Increased usage limits compared to the free tier (higher message/query allowances than free users).
• Does not include full SuperGrok-level features such as Grok Bot, the highest usage tiers, advanced Expert mode limits, or the full Imagine image/video generation package at SuperGrok quality/limits.
• Includes X perks: checkmark (verification), reduced ads, longer posts, edit button, reply prioritization, Media Studio, creator tools, and related platform benefits.

SuperGrok ($30/month or $300/year)
• Primary focus: The Grok AI product itself (grok.com and Grok apps).
• Higher Grok usage and features: Typically described as ~5× longer conversations, higher rate limits across Chat/Imagine/Voice/Build, Grok Bot (always-on agents), Expert mode, HD image/video generation (e.g., 720p ~30-second video), and priority access relative to lower tiers.
• Does not by itself grant X Premium platform features (checkmark, ad reduction, reply boost, etc.).

Key practical differences
• Grok capability: SuperGrok is the higher tier for serious or heavy Grok use. X Premium only modestly raises the free-tier limits.
• What else you get: X Premium is mostly about the social platform. SuperGrok is about AI capacity and features.
• Billing & account: Separate subscriptions. Canceling one does not affect the other. Linking an X account can sometimes surface X-tier Grok benefits on the Grok side, but they do not automatically stack to full SuperGrok levels.
• Cost comparison: SuperGrok costs roughly 3.5× more annually because it delivers substantially more Grok capacity and features. X Premium+ (the higher X tier, ~$395/year) is the one that bundles SuperGrok-level Grok access plus full ad-free X and other Premium+ benefits.

Note on recent changes (as of mid-October 2026): New sign-ups are primarily directed to a unified “X Subscription” ladder (Plus ~$8, Premium ~$30 that includes SuperGrok-level benefits + Cursor Pro + X Premium+ features, plus higher Super/Ultra tiers). Existing SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers generally keep their current plans and pricing for now. Always confirm current offerings and limits at x.ai/pricing and help.x.com, as features and exact quotas can change.

Bottom line: The $84/year X Premium gives you better-than-free Grok plus X platform perks. The $300/year SuperGrok is the dedicated higher-capacity Grok subscription. They are not equivalent.”

If you're a power user and/or a business owner or artist, I can see paying that price, but for most people, that level of access is not needed.

Since we're on the subject of AIs, I've been using GPT and Claude back and forth for several things in the past 6-9 months.
A recent project that needed a bunch of files to go back and forth got me to enroll in paid trial with GPT. It worked, but I still had to drive more of the process than I would have hoped.

After that I gave a detailed query about which of several engines was best and GPT was surprisingly direct in acknowledging its shortcomings and failures. A small part of that is copied below.

The interesting part was the differentiation between entertainment, writing and generic content vs. more technical help and problem solver. Also that I'm having to do too much of what I should expect the AI to actually do.

quote:
My recommendation is that you should seriously consider switching your primary paid AI subscription away from ChatGPT—or at least make ChatGPT earn its renewal against Claude and Gemini.

I wouldn't recommend paying for a more expensive ChatGPT plan until you've established that the additional capabilities actually solve the problems you've encountered.

Based on our work together over the past several months, I think you're a particularly good test case for what separates an AI that's impressive in demonstrations from one that's genuinely useful in everyday life.

Your problem isn't that you don't know how to write prompts. It's that you're having to do too much of the AI's job.

1. What I think you actually need

Your conversations reveal a fairly consistent pattern. You aren't primarily using AI for entertainment, creative writing, or generating generic content. You're using it as a combination of researcher, technical specialist, analyst, and problem solver.

You expect it to:

Investigate rather than speculate. When you ask how to change an Apple, Amazon, or FedEx setting, you want the actual current procedure, not a plausible-sounding sequence of menus.

Take ownership of a problem. When we're working through a complicated Contacts synchronization issue, you shouldn't have to identify every overlooked setting, inconsistency, and follow-up step yourself.

Retain and apply context. You shouldn't have to repeat information about your devices, financial situation, property, vehicles, or preferences.

Perform detailed research. Whether it's locating an obscure product, comparing insurance options, or evaluating a retirement decision, you want a researched answer rather than the first few search results.

Exercise judgment. You want the AI to identify implications you haven't considered, challenge assumptions when warranted, and offer useful next steps.

Execute efficiently. You are willing to spend time on a difficult problem, but not on repeatedly correcting instructions that should have been verified before being presented.

The distinction I'd make is that you want an AI assistant that behaves more like a capable professional adviser than a conversational search engine.

That's a reasonable expectation for a paid product, although none of the major AI systems consistently meets it today.

I just ask my Wife, but it usually costs more than the premium AI platforms.

Pipe Smoker, are those rates as of today? Because XAI has announced that one subscription now gets you access to X, Cursor (for coding), Grok, and Grok Bot.
Apparently the bundle is about half the cost of previous subscriptions.

Tomorrow I'm going to look at what works best for me. Currently paying $100/month for Grok and unless I'm using it like crazy don't run out of headroom.

I'm planning on trying to learn to use Grok Bot, and collaborate with my math/CS whiz kid sons to see what we can get done.

Edited: I signed up for the $100//month bundle. It looks like $200 a month gets you what you used to have to pay $300 a month for.
