But...how do you read them in the dark?

Seeing those covers bring back memories. I had all 3 of those books. I don't remember them being that scary however. I was probably about 10 - 11 when I bought those at school.

The thread title made me think of one of my favorite episodes of The Andy Griffith Show.
Where Andy takes Opie and his friends on a camping trip, with Barney and Gomer. Andy is telling a scary campfire story...

I still have all of those, too. SSTTITD was a collection of short stories. Goosebumps was a series where each book was a single story. In my opinion, Goosebumps tended to swing a bit more towards the fun type of scary as opposed to the give-you-nightmares scary.

The one about the little black dog and the one with the horse that would kill it's owner, scared the shit out of me. So much so that I still remember the stories to this day.
Situation awareness is defined as a continuous extraction of environmental information, integration of this information with previous knowledge to form a coherent mental picture in directing further perception and anticipating future events. Simply put, situational awareness mean knowing what is going on around you.

The weird creepy illustrations that went along with the stories were absolutely haunting and still stick with me to this day.

This one?
Hearse Song
Don’t ever laugh when a hearse goes by, You just might be the next to die They’ll wrap you in a big white sheet From your head down to your feet. They’ll throw you in a big black box And fill your grave with dirt and rocks. And there you’ll lie for about a week, Until your coffin springs a leak. The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out, The worms play pinochle on your snout. They’ll eat your ears, they’ll eat your nose, They’ll gobble your fingers and your toes. But then a great big rat will come Crawl in your mouth and out your bum. Your skin will turn a sickly blue, Your brains will melt and turn to goo You spread them on a slice of bread, And that’s what you eat when you are dead.
