A lot of our fire fighters here work two days for one city and then two days for another city. They make bank doing so.

These days no PDs other than the largets cities has the budget for full time staff who aren't out working the road. I needed a police report beause I lost my wallet and had to replace a federal photo ID. The desk officer had to call an officer in off of patrol to take the report.

So I drove over to our local police precinct to find the door locked. I knocked on the door (this was during business hours). No answer. No big deal as I see the buzzer. I buzz and wait a few minutes but no answer. Another buzz and wait and still no answer. I knocked on another door without response. Cars are in the secure lot but the place looks like it's locked up tighter than Fort Knox.

We did,

I understand... so I won't tell little Aiden... he would be heart broken.
Nor will I tell the Mens club at my church who earlier this month catered in a complete meal for an entire shift.

All I can say is those two jobs along with being an EMT I could never do... I'm not just saying I would never choose to do them but that I just am not brave or mentally strong enough to do them.

The FD in my town are the first responders to any traffic accident.... I have an acquaintance that has told me stories about that and going through a home after a fire.....

I never got into the PD vs. FD thing. They did their thing while we did our thing. Also, I never ever wanted to do their thing. I'm always happy when the FD and EMS arrive on scene to take over anything related to medical. I'll do the initial first on scene stabilization, but FD/EMS are more than welcomed to take over.

For our department, we routinely accept food from community groups/churches/individuals and are glad to have it. These donations are always routed through our chain of command and vetted beforehand, though.

We truly appreciate these gestures.

As far as finding someone at the office after-hours, like most have said it's not likely for us. There are two officers permanently stationed at the headquarters downtown, but all the division (aka precinct) offices are locked down after hours and most of the officers are out humping calls. They are actually discouraged from just hanging out at the office unless it's to eat or use the bathroom, etc. Even the supervisors try to stay out of the office as much as possible.

The statistic nerds say we should have 22 officers working in my division on paper to cover the calls. We usually have 8. That should give you an idea of why it's like that. While the firemen are sleeping, BTW...

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

A local church adopted our fire department and they bring us goodies for our monthly training meeting. I get why the coppers won't take outside food, don't order food they can't watch being made.

Having worked for a private EMS company going on 5 years now I've come to appreciate LE's help on scene. If we have to get an OD to a safer place to treat them or contain them after we wake them up it's usually the cops jumping in and helping.

Despite the gentle ribbing, all of us in public safety really are just one big dysfunctional family. But the full time fire guys do eat the best.
