But he’s not allowed to vote in Georgia because of a law rooted in the years after the Civil War, when whites sought to keep blacks from the ballot box.

With a criminal history dating back decades, 53-year-old Brown has more than three years left on probation after serving behind bars for theft and credit-card fraud. Enough time has passed that he qualifies for a federal government credential to deliver cargo to and from the Port of Savannah, but Brown can’t take part in elections.

“I would like to vote,” Brown said. “I go off and do the time, come back out and they hold me hostage again because I’m on probation.”

Brown and tens of thousands of other Georgia residents are cut off from voting due to a vaguely worded law that state election officials interpret in the strictest possible manner…”

When your you have completed you probation successfully, and you have made full restitution, with interest, to those people you stole form, come and talk to us. We will grant you the opportunity to petition for restoration of your voting privilege.

Kinda my thoughts, too. In olden days, all felonies were punishable by death, and most crimes were felonies. Painted a pretty bleak picture for would-be "career criminals." You COULD be a career criminal, I suppose, but it would be one short-ass career. Somewhere around 1820 or so, we became entirely too soft.

Pretty much every state requires felons to complete the terms of their sentence, including probation and or parole before their voting rights are restored. This is not news.

Losing your voting rights is a part of the sentence.
My question is, why are they allowing a guy with his record drive into a secured facility?
I would hope that he has learned his lesson and continues to be a law abiding and productive citizen for the rest of his life. Once he has done that for an extended period of time, come back and try this again.

Felons in Florida are crying because the administration interprets "Completing your Sentence" as doing any time AND paying fines / fees / etc.

Leftists are crying about a "Poll Tax", but a sentence is many things - Incarceration, Parole, restitution, and fines. Complete them all to be eligible for voting rights.
