Happy New Year - Time for Black Eye Peas
What's your New Years tradition, this is a good a place as any to share.

For us it's been Black Eye Peas for good luck as long as I can remember, we spice it up with Rotel and Hot Sauce, over rice and sprinkle in ham.

Some call it Hoppin John when it's made that way, it's a take on that recipe and most everyone makes Hoppin John a bit different.

Might even have a little 21 year old Kirkland Single Malt with a The Tabernacle cigar tonight, watch some football...

Happy New Years to all and best wishes for a good healthy and wealthy year, and that Trump Wins...

My wife grew up eating Oliebollen and Apple Flappen for New Year’s. Me, it was black Eye peas.

Our new year’s tradition is shutting off our phones so that when people call at midnight it won’t wake us up.

Black eyed peas (in Hoppin’ John dish), collards, jalapeño cornbread will do it.

Yup black eyed peas, diced red bell pepper, diced bacon and smoked ham hock for flavor. Over rice with collard greens on the side for additional good luck. How my wife’s southern granny made it. Quite a production but once a year on New Year’s Day is worth it. And we need the good luck Happy New Years all !

Black eyed peas, greens, cornbread and ham are staples for as long as my Southern Belle has cooked for me which was 51 years last August 4th. By the way a terrible time of the year to go anywhere that’s under a hundred degrees. Not quite sure why we chose that date.

Well, usually it's a pork roast and sauerkraut with apples and potatoes. Black-eyed peas (in the form of hoppin' John's), greens. There may be other things, but that's the base.

Some years it might be a nice smoked sausage, sauerkraut and potatoes. Black-eyed peas ( hoppin John's). Greens.

Concannon made with both cabbage and kale might make an appearance.

Or Corned beef, with potatoes, carrots, cabbage, Concannon. Greens.

This year its corned beef.

So far no luck, but I keep hoping that will turn around one day.

Mom did a variance of above, she also made Welsh cake, and donuts. She would have a light breakfast, maybe Brunch or for Lunch she would make Welsh rarebite, and tomato soup, mashed potato cake with cheese inside.

I have Black Eyed Peas slow cooking in Goya ham seasoning right now. I have a spiral cut ham in the fridge and have turnip greens ready to boil in the morning.

I'll make the cornbread 30 minutes before dinner.

Have blackeye peas with ham hocks and smoked pork ribs every New Year Day in our 55 years of marriage wherever we are. Even when we were overseas 18 years.

Glory Seasoned Blackeye Peas for me. With pork sausage, black pepper, and Cholula Green Pepper hot sauce. Neat.

It’s pork and sauerkraut here in Pennsylvania due to the PA Dutch (Germans actually) influence.

Was going to do a pork shoulder in crockpot with German style sauerkraut (white wine, onions, apples, bacon) but the wife mistakenly bought a big loin instead so I cut that into boneless chops and they’re curing/brining and will get grilled instead, will still do the kraut that way and make mashed potatoes to go with it all.
