SigM4What can you tell me about Wichita, KS?
Will most likely be getting a job offer for a position based in Wichita. What can you tell me about the area? I’ve driven through numerous times but never ventured far from the turnpike.
Would be moving my family of 5 (8, 4, 2 y/o) so good schools are a must. So far the Maize, Goddard, Andover, and maybe Derby areas look promising. Work location would be in the Stanley/Aley neighborhood but would also be traveling westward from there for work pretty regularly.
Things to consider beyond the obvious?
Thanks for any input.

ZSMICHAELMy grandparents lived there when they retired. Nice safe and rather boring community. Hot in the summer.Wichita State is there which is a good thing. They used to be dominated by the aircraft industry. Have no idea now. What can I say it is Kansas. You know Bob Dole and the center of the United States in Salina.

GWbikerProbably is a nice town.
All I remember is I got a speeding ticket on the GW there. PSL was 55mph. I was doing warp 5.
My Radar detector (V1) was snoozing at the time.

RipleyThere is a visible sense of civic pride in Wichita which is nice. Between the wide open cow town days and the boom town of WWII Wichita, there are remains of those special histories. There may be more eateries per capita than anywhere in the country. The economy isn't what it was but where is that different? If given the choice, coming from Kansas City, drive in on the Kansas Turnpike through the Flint Hills.

Sailor1911Have lived here since 1979. Wouldn't trade it.
The areas you mentioned are all outside the USD 259, Wichita Public School District and all have pretty good schools. The USD 259 district has some pretty good schools too but you have to be selective based on where you would live or use the "Magnet Schools" option to put a kid at a school that is not their "neighborhood school. Both of my kids went to USD 259 and were in the magnet and IB programs through grade school and went to Heights (NE Wichita) for HS. We live in NE Wichita and were "in the sticks" when we bought but since are several miles from the East City limits.
Would be happy to discuss and/or show you around. Email is in the profile. Next few weeks are not good, I'm a CPA. Hence the midnight post - Just shut down the office. But, I could also put you in touch with trusted friends that would be happy to show you the town.
If you email, I can give you a number to call me and we can cover more in a phone call than email tag.
And, BTW, Sigmonkey has Wichita roots and still has family here.

SigM4Lots of good info, thanks.
Sailor I’ll shoot you an email at some point today, thank you for the offer. Sounds like the transition up there may happen very quickly.

Calif PhilBell Aire and Park city is a nice area, I live two hours north of Wichita. The car culture is pretty big in Wichita if you like car shows. The airport is a nice place to fly in and out of. Like any big big city there are some bad parts but if I ever moved to a big KS city it would be Wichita.

HRKHear that the county has job openings for a Lineman...

mrapteam666I like the area
Like others have said it is a nice area with low crime. Yes, it does have a few crappy areas but what city or county doesn't.
Wichita State was on my top five list of schools I wanted to play college baseball at. (I never got a call back(
At one time I wanted to be a Police Officer there but it was early in my career and I was looking for something more action packed.
Now that I am older I have looked at working there, Dodge City, Olathe etc..
I always found the people rather friendly along with the residents in Abilene, Hays, Manhatten etc..
If you like minor league sports they have hockey, baseball, soccer, arena football, etc..
(Now this was all pre-covid)

coloradohunter44Just spent 3 days there with the jet. Traffic seemed okay. Tons of places to eat. Some big lakes nearby for summer water activities. Lots of aviation history, and a Air Force base. You could do much worse.
