I work with several demolition companies, and I was just having this conversation with one of them a week or so back.

He said they will use explosives, but it is their least liked choice for this exact reason. He said you're making an educated guess on what will happen structurally, and if it doesn't work out you find yourself in pickle.

The entire structure is now unstable so you can't get anybody anywhere near it.

Think ya used enough dynamite there, Butch?

Evidently not...

You see, this is what happens when you bring the experts in, instead of letting men who are still 12 year old boys at heart do the job. I'm willing to bet that a bunch of Sigforumites with an unlimited energetics budget could have brought that place down (up?) no problem. We might have gotten half of Pontiac along with it, but the Silverdome would be gone baby, gone.

Interesting. I was thinking that nobody can go near it now. You confirmed my suspicion. What would the backup plan be?

They probably all have their fingers crossed hoping it will fall on its own after a bit. If not, I bet the wrecking ball is the likely answer. They can get a big crane at a safe enough distance. Maybe once it starts to go, it will all go.

They should have placed a surplus of charges. Explosives aren’t THAT expensive.

It looks to me like they want to show the world how expert they are so they use the bare minimum of explosives. Too much might endanger viewers or near by buildings. Sure, too little lets it remain standing with no obvious plan B. Its what makes it fun. Of course if I were in charge, I'd make the fools who fail go in, safe or not. Just that threat should be enough to get them to use just a little more.

Screw the engineers. Get a bunch of middle aged guys who like things that explode. Set up a beer truck with free beer on the side. Then make a deal that if they make it fall on the first try, there are strippers for everyone in the evening. That cheap ass dome wouldn't have a chance.

I was watching an interview with one of the demo guys. Apparently they had enough but an unknown failure caused 8 of the charges to remain unfired. They do not know if it was damage, error, or vandalism.

The explosions you saw were blowing the concrete, and they had 8 shaped charges that were supposed to cut the beams. Those 8 charges were all wired together and none of them fired.

Or, they could use it for the HUSSEIN Obama Presidential Library. It would be symbolic of what he has done to our country.
