I was a haberdasher in college - the men’s side of clothing. For larger people, we had a suit size that you typically only saw in specialty stores called “portly. These suits were designed for men with, shall we say, extra large guts or as we would say, “He has chester drawers disease” which means the guys chest has fallen down to his drawers (beer belly). Anyway, one day a friend came in with his mom and dad. His dad was looking for a new suit for church. As is typical with guys, we think we know our pant size and nothing will change our mind. So we were taught to just measure and then without saying much bring over a variety of suits we thought would fit. My friend’s dad was adamant he was a 42 regular (fairly common size). I measured it differently, way differently. Long story short, he was a 46 portly short (short and fat). Rather than telling him that, I gave him the pants and the suit coat I thought would fit to try on. When he came out of the changing room he was so proud about how well the suit fit and being right about his size. Then his wife asked me the size. “46 portly short Mrs. ____.” My friend drops to the floor laughing and the wife lost it too. Best part of the story? He bought two suits from me. From what I understand, women’s clothing has been resized. For example, an 8 today was mostly likely a 12 or 14 several years ago. That being said, I can’t see a business being so blunt. But it is 2021. __________________________ | |||
