Most of them aren't just left, but avowed anarchists, Noam Chomsky is their intellectual hero....provided they read. They aren't smart enough to work the current economic system or, political system, like their smarter lefty colleagues in tech, entertainment or, media companies; they truly believe they are the proletariat. As he points out, media (the smarter left) provides top-cover, by minimizing their activities as they give tacit approval.

Generally self-segregating and wallowing in self-pity, these folks have been around for quite awhile. European protests helped codify their tactics and ideology, principally in the UK and Germany, then adopted the Antifa moniker. Black Bloc groups have existed in political protests for awhile, until the WTO riots in Seattle in '99, police and the general public viewed them as disaffected-immature young adults still hell-bent on living out their college rebellion years. Today, they're the Brown Shirts of the left political spectrum, the Squadristi.
