When certain terms begin taking on changing definitions....such as 'doddering' and 'cranky'.....

When 'senior discounts' and 'Sir, may I help you with that' become more welcome;

When you suddenly realize what it means when there are those 10 years younger who refer to themselves as 'elderly'....

My mother-in-law is 99 and in a nursing home. I consider her elderly.

I guess it depends on who you ask.
Most teens use terms like 'Crusty Old Geezer' and 'Dusty MFer' to describe anyone over 60 40.

Not dissimilar to some responses already posted, “elderly,” in my mind, more associated with infirmity than chronological age.

These things have actually happened to me:

Getting a senior discount down at the diner without even asking for one.

When a pretty young lady opened the door for me and gave me a big smile. Then my buddy said Hey she's not interested in your or thinking you're hot and sexy. It's just that you remind her of her dear sweet granddaddy.

Ugh.

I think snoris hit the nail on the head.

Elderly is not a particular age. There's a frailty of mind body that goes along with being elderly. I know quite a few people that are old, but not elderly and quite a few people just as old that are quite elderly.

I'm 65, but work at a fairly physically and mentally demanding job (not for much longer, however) and don't consider myself "elderly" - yet.
