Depends how old you are when you answer the question. When I was 30, I thought 65 was elderly. Now I'd love to be 65 again, but not quite yet elderly.

I believe that being old has a lot to do with the persons state of mind as well as some medical issues even though they might be minor in issue..... Have a friend living in a assisted living facility where one of his neighbors just celebrated her 108th birthday this past week... She gets around pretty good with very little help and her mind is sharp as a tack.... Just last month I turned 75yrs young drill sgt.

I guess I never acted my age and it’s starting to become a benefit.
When fifty percent of the people in the obituaries are younger than you, you’re probably getting there.

Rather, to me, the term "elderly" implies a significant diminishment in capability. Someone becoming frail with limited mobility, or that is unable to fully care for themselves, is elderly. But whether that happens at age 65 or 95 varies from person to person.

That is my definition exactly. I'm 73, wife is 80 and we're both still in good shape mentally and physically. OTOH, given a significant medical event, we could both be "elderly" tomorrow.

Good thread. Elderly is defined as old. Old comes after middle-aged. I think 65 isn't too far off for most people. Any word for old eventually takes on negative connotations.

I am not going with an age, I would say while I’m 65 the threshold is incontinence.

To my mind it seems like 70 is the magic age. Why? Because if someone dies before they turn 70 everybody says "but, he was so young!" die after 70 and it's "well, he had a pretty good run."

My lower back reminds me that I'm "old" every morning when I climb out of bed. I figure I'll be "elderly" when I start needing help to get out of bed. I guess I better start training the dogs to help me roll out...

If you are alive past the avg life expectancy you're elderly.
1-12 = child
13-19 = teenager
20-39 = young
40-59 = middle age
60-75 = mature/senior
76+ = elderly

Nah. 80+ for a good run. JMHO…

Mental acuity is probably a better measure. I've seen 60 year old's with dementia reduced to infants and 90 year old's that are still quick.

It's interesting that you pick that exact number. That's the age of my parents. They were quite "young" and active in their 70's, but at age 81 they are definitely on the downhill slide.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
