77 y.o. brother was stopped at a red light at a 6 lane intersection when a 28 y.o. kid banged in too him. It was the lunch rush hour and some A holes started honking while they both assessed the damage. The agreed to go in too the parking lot on the other side of the intersection to exchange info, But when Bill pulled in the lot the kid bolted. Only the third accident in his 50 years of driving, He's not wise to the tricks and gimmick's. none of his three accidents were his fault. $2,500.00 damage to his Toyota. he was not hurt oh well, now he knows Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. Always take a photo of the other car's license plate, and the driver. Always, always. -c1steve

I had something similar happen when driving my Dad's VW bug in 1968, hit and run. Always, always get the plate # first before anything else! Sorry this happened to your brother, a tough lesson to learn. 51 years later, I haven't forgotten mine.

I'm sorry to hear that bendable. Did you brother not get the other person's license plate?

I would guess the kid had no insurance and you would be on the hook anyway. Hopefully uninsured motorist will cover the damage. It is not enough damage to run a classified ad looking for witnesses to the accident.

Sorry to hear it. It happens around here quite a bit sadly. Always get the license plate (most important) and pictures of the plate and driver are great for atleast charging and getting your insurance after them.

no red light camera, but my brother mentioned to the responding officer that there was no front plate on the bad guys car. Officer said that he would go back to see if the plate was knocked off when the accident occurred. "Holy moly. Eek There's another bendable like being out there? " by sig2340 Bill and I are polar opposites, he is the most successful of all of us, the best off financially , the most sociable, the handiest, the most skilled, the highest achiever , he really needs to write a book about all of his achievements. officer found no detached Lic. plate at the sceneThis message has been edited. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Good to hear police are willing to do that for your brother. We in Mississippi have only the rear plate. We are too poor.

Us old folks remember the discontinuance of front plates to save gas. Along with the 55MPH Intersate speed limit most states eliminated front plates to lower wind resistance & increase gas mileage. __________________________________________________ If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit! Knowing is Half the Battle |
Uninsured motorist only covers personal injuries. This would fall under his Collision coverage, assuming he had full coverage. He'd be out his deductible. About a year ago the guy in front of me at a light false started and I slightly tapped into him at less than 2 mph, it dented my aluminum license plate on his trailer hitch that stuck out 4" from his BMW X5. We both knew we made contact, we stopped and he immediately pointed out the scratches to his bumper I knew my car couldn't have made. While he was taking down my insurance and DL info I snapped pics of his trailer hitch, license plate and bumper. I'm pretty sure he didn't even notice me do it. I asked him to get an estimate and contact me, knowing it was a pretty low damage claim. He immediately filed a claim on my insurance instead of contacting me. I sent my insurance the pics of my slightly dented license plate, and his massively sticking out hitch. They denied his claim as pre-existing, no at-fault claim for me! I once had an uninsured girl run into my car 20 feet in front of me in a Target parking lot, she got out acting like nothing happened, if I hadn't been there I would have been SOL. I took pics of her car, my car, DL and insurance. She "couldn't find her insurance card" as it was her uncle's car. It turns out she had no insurance, I filed a small claims case against her, obtained a default judgment and the DOT suspended her license until she paid up. Had I called the cops, the accident report would have accomplished the same thing. Finally, in St. Louis some "individuals" side -swiped my wife's car, I hurried to the scene because they were acting sketchy. Wife told me the driver said he didn't have insurance, I told her to call the cops. After they are done wife tells me the passenger said he was the driver. I rolled my eyes and later ran him in the municipal court computer, the driver had a warrant. To their credit, they made good on paying cash for the damages, I thought for sure I was going to get mugged walking out of the Panera where the deal went down to settle things up. I've since moved past uninsured fender benders and moved to running into deer.

Chip away the stone |
That sucks. I hope the driver can be tracked down and punished. As long as you have a decent phone camera, it should only take seconds to get images of the plate, the driver, the damage, and the documents. Confirm they are all good images, and be on your way.

That's exactly why I have a dash cam running anytime the engine is running. Very little chance of he said/she said.

Maybe. This seems to vary by state. Some states, like Pennslvania (and maybe Scuba Steve's state), cover hit-and-run as collision, some as comprehensive. Some states cover hit-and-run physical damage as uninsured motorist with no deductible applicable. Ask your agent/broker, read your policy, or check your state statutes. Pennsylvania Uninsured Motorist Coverage applies to Bodily Injury in three cases: 1. Damage by a motorist with no insurance; 2. Damage by a hit-and-run (unidentifiable) driver; and 3. Damage by a motorist insured by an insurance company which has become insolvent. In Pennsylvania, Under-insured Motorist coverage kicks in if the responsible driver is not carrying enough Bodily Injury liability coverage for the injuries caused.
