I would guess something like a helical scanning recorder with 2" or maybe 1" reel to reel tape, perhaps made by Ampex.

Those were fun to erase with a massive degausser (electromagnet) that was kept at the other end of the building from the archive.

Massive tape on massive reels compared we that we have today.

Thanks for the blast from the past...

Philips/Peto Scott VTRs. The Phillips is yellow with model 3400. Peto is not yellow but as best as I can determine, they were the same model with different names on them which was part of the hint.
