Thomas… described Washington as a place where “people pride themselves in being awful.”
“It is a hideous place as far as I’m concerned,” Thomas said.
“It’s one of the reasons we like RVing,” he added. “You get to be around regular people who don’t pride themselves in doing harmful things merely because they have the capacity to do it or because they disagree.”
I did 12 years there, moved to AZ and never looked back. I haven't been back to visit in 10 yrs and I plan to never go back. The day I knew I was moving away was when I was standing at the bottom of the gargantuan escalator at Metro Center, on the way to work, I looked up at all the throngs of commuters and said, "Even if I win the race, I'm still a rat."

Visited a son in NYC and after 5 days there can say we can add that New York to the list. Dirty, graffiti ever where you go, dope smokers all over the sidewalk. And expensive!

I've lived in the DC area for over 35 years now. Used to enjoy going into the city, worked in one building about 14 years. But for the last several years admittedly, it's not the same atmosphere. Place gives me the creeps now. Justice Thomas called it right.

I sure would like to visit the Smithsonian museums in DC. Also the monuments in person. Cannot think of another reason I would ever go there. Probably will remain on the bucket list, unfulfilled.

Temper this with the fact that Judge Thomas lives in one of the most exclusive and toney neighborhoods inside the beltway (no, not mine). So he isn't exposed quite so much to the less civilized areas, the ones that make a cesspool look like paradise. DC is really trying hard to keep up with Chicago, St. Louis, etc. and local govt. officials are as "progressive" as any.
The biggest thing DC has going for it is the annual Federal payment, ostensibly to compensate for lost tax revenues due to the prevalence of Federal Govt. properties (but far more $$$ than they could squeeze out of their impoverished citizens. However, they seem to be chronically unable to direct these monies to the benefit of those who live in the city. Of course they constantly cry it is "not enough." Thanks to all you taxpayers who help keep our Capital city safe, clean, and pothole-free!
The local news organizations run a poll every few years asking "who should be the DC mayor?" If Marion Barry were alive, he'd win that election in a landslide. This is the prevalent mentality of the general populace. Hell, I think he'd be elected without the necessity of being alive.
There are still some small pockets of right-thinking families in the suburbs, but the cancer that is DC has metastasized to 40 miles or more from the city center. At least I don't live in Maryland!

When Justice Thomas says “You get to be around regular people who don’t pride themselves in doing harmful things merely because they have the capacity to do it or because they disagree” he's not talking about street thugs. He's talking about the bureaucrats and lobbyists and the like. Evil reptiles, one and all.

Yup, that was quite clear what he meant, the true filthy swamp creatures that make the street thugs look like choir boys, with their ability to destroy lives and weaken a nation with great ease. And never being held accountable for their crime.

I consciously and adamantly fought against any details (assignments) to the DC area during my naval career. Wanted no part of that funny farm. I succeeded. No doubt it cost me plum career enhancing billets but such is life.

Spring of 1965. The ink was barely dry on my new pilot certificate. I thought it would be a good idea to rent an airplane and fly to Washington National (later renamed to Ronald Reagan) airport, see the cherry blossoms, and do a few other tourist things.
It was a nice day back then. I would not go there in the current environment.
