TULSA, Okla. -- QuikTrip Corp. is responding to a surge in crime in its Tulsa, Okla., locations by recruiting armed security professionals.

Instead of contracting out the work to security guards and off-duty police officers, the convenience-store chain, based in Tulsa, is investing in on-staff trained security personnel.

QuikTrip is not arming its standard associates, despite reports from local news organizations. “They will have completely different clothing than store employees,” Mike Thornbrugh, the company's manager of public and government affairs, told CSP Daily News. “Their uniforms will clearly say QuikTrip security.”

Thornbrugh said the new security team members are part of an effort to reduce petty crimes in their Tulsa locations, which have seen more theft, loitering and panhandling. Since Oklahoma reclassified some property violations as misdemeanors instead of felonies last year, he said, people have become more fearless. “With all the decriminalization that states are enacting, we’ve seen an uptick in property crimes, and law enforcement is overwhelmed,” he said.

The company has already tested employing security personnel at locations in Wichita, Kan., helping to decrease petty crime in those units, Thornbrugh said. “The individuals in those stores know who the security officer is and maintain friendly relationships,” he said. “They aren’t just going to [commit a crime] when you have someone of authority in the store.”

Tulsa, Okla.-based QuikTrip is an $11 billion company with more than 750 stores in 11 states. It is No. 12 on CSP’s 2018 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by number of company-owned retail outlets.

Cheaper, but they retain 100% of the liability.

The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I suspect they have formed an entity that carries the proper insurance and licensing required, not much different than the other various entities that cover the other aspects of their business.

The trucking company is separate from the real estate company which is separate from the operators of the stores. Why pay a security company when you're that large and can simply own it yourself? Especially when this gives you 100% control over how everything is handled. No middle man.

I heard they are starting at $35 an hour. Not bad if you meet their requirements.

Yes, and I'm sure they would pay a lot more to farm it out to contractors.

Damn, they could hire off duty LE for that. That is about the starting pay for secondary work around here.

That's what they have been doing, but LE can't run a cash register or stock the shelves. They're looking for somebody with LE credentials that's willing to do QT work. A hybrid employee.

That's not exactly what the article says...

But it also doesn't say they won't have other duties as well. That part is not clear.

They might be doing non-cashier type duties., i.e. cleaning restrooms, pressure washing the sidewalk/parking spaces, etc.(QT does run a tight ship. Every store is very clean).

Here's a fight between one of their security guards and a mouthy customer a few days ago.

I don't know what happened before this video is rolling, but I'm thinking they better be more careful who they hire for security.

That's an outside security guard from a contracted security agency, not a QT employee.

Yep, I meant to say that, but was distracted. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Whoops. I have deer behind my back fence and was summoned to look.

I believe that's exactly the reason they're going this route. I suspect they want to do their own screening and hiring instead of having a third party send whomever they wish.

The QuikTrip on Southern by the 101 is a regular stop for me when visiting Tempe. Right next to the 101 makes it an easy get-away.

The washer bins with window squeegees at that location ... the water is always dank; I get the feeling someone put a dead mouse in each one. Literally disgusting.
