I use thick electrical tape. It probably does a pretty good job at making audio unintelligible. Also, I turn off the signal from the mic in the settings software. A spy app might bypass that, but maybe not.
As to my cellphone, it sits on the countertop with the camera side down. If somehow somebody accesses the selfie camera all they will see is the ceiling 99.999% of the time. When I'm using the phone all they'll see is my ear.
