Woman killed in Clear Brook shooting identified. Homeowner shoots, kills alleged attempted burglar

By CYNTHIA CATHER BURTON | The Winchester Star Mar 5, 2018

(The story was updated to include the identification of the woman killed in the shooting. Her first name was initially misspelled in a news release this afternoon, but has been corrected.)

CLEAR BROOK — A homeowner shot and killed a woman who was apparently trying to break into his residence on Saturday night.

The shooting occurred in the 200 block of Ruebuck Lane in Clear Brook in northeastern Frederick County, Capt. Aleck Beeman of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release issued Sunday afternoon.

Police identified the woman as Shayna E. Lacy, 39, of Bunker Hill, W. Va., this afternoon after an autopsy.

Deputies responded to the home about 9:50 p.m. after the homeowner called 911 to report the shooting.

“The owner of the residence reported that one or two subjects were trying to break into his residence through his bedroom window,” the release states. “The suspect broke out the bedroom window and reached inside of the window. The homeowner reported that he fired one round from his 12-gauge shotgun through the window when he saw the suspect’s hands come through the window.”

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found the woman’s body outside the home by the bedroom window.

The homeowner was in bed when he heard someone trying to break into his house, Beeman said.

Beeman said the Sheriff’s Office is trying to determine if more than one person was involved in the attempted break-in. He said residents in the area “don’t need to be concerned,” but he declined to elaborate. He said this wasn’t a case of a homeowner mistakenly shooting a resident of the home who was trying to sneak back inside.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 540-662-6162 and ask for Investigator Veronica Beauvais.

Nope. No need for further concern on the part of local residents. The problem was taken care of.

And the tax payers won’t be billed for legal and incarceration costs. And she won’t be back on the street in three years. Good shoot.

The homeowner, later identified as 65-year-old Gregory Grove, was arrested March 5, when investigators re-interviewed him two days after the March 3 shooting.

“During the interview the investigators noticed an odor that is consistent with burnt crack cocaine. Mr. Grove was asked about illegal drug use and consented to a search of his room,” a sheriff’s spokesperson said. “Investigators located drug paraphernalia and a white substance that field tested positive for cocaine. Mr. Grove was arrested for possession of cocaine and transported to the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center.

The plot thickens. I guess it wasn't a randomly chosen house.
