Larger than life and a bit controversial; his impact on NSW and counterterrorism as a whole cannot be denied.

I spent some time downrange with a gentleman who know Dick Marcinko well, and said the man was every bit what he portrayed himself to be.

His writing is extremely rough, and I keep hoping he comes out with more. Alas, not.

I did pick up on elements of what he wrote that were completely untrue (descriptions of jumping, etc), very embellished, and have no doubt much of his writing was likewise, but his books were still a guilty pleasure, and I'd have liked to meet the man and buy him a bombay saphire.

His book, "Leadership Secrets of the Rogue Warrior" is valid, and I reminded my own kids of some of his ten commandments, often. In particular, "thou hast not to like it, thou hast only to do it."

Sorry to hear of his passing. Perhaps for him, today is his first easy day.

81 years is not bad for a man who lived a significant part of his life down range. God Bless him

There's 81... then there's THIS 81!
I'd place him right up there with a "Keith Richards-esuqe" kinda lifestyle!
Talk about doing it at 110mph, 110% of the time!

We worked with more than a few different SEAL teams while I was in the Marines, and a few after the Corps. Getting to know some of them and talking back and forth, there was more than a few that said "well... I read this book, and THATS what I wanted to do!"

I'd like to know how many people he's inspired to at least go into BUDs.

Fair winds and following seas, Sir!

I remember seeing him on TV during a 60-minutes interview, not sure how I came across it as I was in my freshman year in college. I knew about SEALs from other readings but, his book included current generation SOF and it solidified for me what I wanted to do. Fast forward a few years, and some medical discoveries and I had to re-adjust my thoughts on a career choice, nevertheless, Rogue Warrior made quite an impression. Fast forward another decade and I got to meet Demo Dick, yup...he was THAT guy, the Rogue Warrior.
RIP Richard Marcinko

Interesting to read that he allegedly named his unit SEAL Team 6 and not SEAL Team 3 was to fuck with and confuse the Soviets and make them wonder about these other three SEAL teams they didn’t know about! Big Grin

Fair winds and a following sea CDR.

I remember very well his Red Cell ops in the 80's.

I was a young 2nd Class Petty Officer going to a Leadership Course at Naval Training Center San Diego and having Shore Patrol. As we were beinging briefed before starting our watch, the Chief in charge of security walks in and just starts screaming how he wanted those Red Cell guys that just sank his security boat caught, he wanted them beat he wanted them in a real cell right now. I remember thinging "Just how does he expect a couple sailors armed with Night Sticks to take down a SEAL Team?"

A week later I'm checking into my new Squadron when they struck again. This time they "Barrowed" a small airplane from the flying club and landing it on our tarmac, jumped out and tossed dummy charges underneath the Helos. After that they ran into the hanger and took he CO hostage and held him for ransome, the got a pizza and a six pack Big Grin
Yes sir, quiet the life lived.
