I also figured eating something that spent its life filtering toxins wasn’t a great idea.
When mom made it, I would have to leave the house as I couldn’t stand the smell of it cooking.

Uni (sea urchin). I love to eat sushi. The first time a friend of mine suggested Uni, I can’t ingest it. It was the texture. But the second time I tried it, I actually liked it. Have been eating it since the failed first attempt. Big Grin

I prefer the red grapefruit and its (unsweetened) juice. I'm supposed to be very cautious with it, due to some of my meds.

A definite no-no if you're taking statins.

I take Crestor (rosuvastatin), which is reputed to be less susceptible to grapefruit interaction.

Exactly my experience. Fresh uni has a wonderful nutty taste, however old uni gets soapy…

Doctor and pharmacist both told me "No grapefruit" when I was taking rosuvastatin.

My cholesterol was just barely on the high side, doc talked me into lowest dosage. A year later, cholesterol had not changed, so I suggested dropping the statin. Doc agreed, cholesterol still has not changed, but grapefruit juice is now back in my life -- YAY!

Reference this article: https://www.goodrx.com/blog/wh...ruit-with-my-statin/ -- not all statins have bad interactions with grapefruit. Crestor is OK.

Tequila took some time for me. I’m still acclimating to high proof whiskeys. Scotch took some time and peaty ones are still no go for me. Chard and kale are iffy - I like them only when cooked with butter and sugar. Natto (Japanese soy bean) took some time but love it now.

Crazy how some food trigger certain folks taste buds and brains different.

Interesting. I knew that many folks (“supertasters”) are averse to cilantro. But I was unaware of celery aversion. Wikipedia says that it’s the result of being able to taste Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC), found in celery:

“It [PTC] has the unusual property that it either tastes very bitter or is virtually tasteless, depending on the genetic makeup of the taster. …”

I eat all kinds of vegetables and eat herbs like cilantro. Being Indian by ethnicity, I grew up eatingveggies and fruit. But, I have never eaten Spam, and things like liver or other organ meats. I also dont eat most beef and pork products, except for well cooked hot dogs.
And, I have Marmite or Vegemite every single day. My friends in Michigan think I am crazy because I love Marmite/Vegemite and I eat ghost peppers on a regular basis!!!SmileSmileSmile

ditto
and its an acquired aversion
I do my best to improve on simple avoidance, I actively eat stuff I ~DO~ like in place of the crap I can no longer tolerate.

Coffee and Scotch. I didn't really start drinking coffee until I was in my 60's when my ex-wife bought me a Keurig coffee maker. Now I have a cup a day, rarely, more than two on any given day. Scotch, I was well into my 50's when I first gave it a try, the peatier the better.

Cilantro I cannot tolerate and I have yet to give Marmite a try.
