Poor guy has a black wife, raising black kids on the west side of Chicago… and he’s going to have another nervous breakdown in 3…2…1…

I’ll post more tomorrow as I’m at work and heading out to a shot-spotter call right now.

I listen to my local Sheriff's Office on scanners. They dispatch a good many Shotspotter calls.

They were really busy New Years eve.

I heard them dispatching units to a Shotspotter during the day. When the units got there it was roofers with nail guns.

These have been in most major cities for a long time. I've chatted with a couple software engineers that worked on these projects. Utilize microphones, and some ARCGIS software to pinpoint firearms reports. So when the cops are called or dispatched they have a better area than "I heard it from somewhere over in that direction..."

Stuff is nothing new.

Chicago's shifting gears to other crime-fighting methods, which sounds like a smart move. Good to see them considering community input too.

Actually a good point.
Could very well be it wasn't financially feasible.

I don't believe this to be the case. CTU and it's base have been very vocal about being "over-policed". The current aldermanic regime is basically socialistic and is heading even further left as I post this. The underlying problems are that they want to defund the police wherever and whenever they can, so this is a 50 million dollar cut, which will end up in the socialist/progressive war chest. Taking the police out of the schools will add more money in the chest as well.

It was in fact feasible, simply because it worked. The money spent on this is a drop in the bucket compared to all the other useless programs that Chicago funds.

BACKGROUND-
I have to start out by saying that Chicago is a very segregated city. It used to be even more so, but has changed (for the worse) over the years.
Years ago (1950-60’s) One neighborhood was Polish, another Irish, another Croatian, That neighborhood was Black, another Mexican, and a different one Puerto Rican…
Now, it’s divided up into mostly White, Black, Hispanic (Stronghold of Puerto Ricans still in the Humboldt Park region before they got priced out due to gentrification). China Town is still Chinese, Koreans are getting pushed out by the Arabs and Mexicans along Lawrence Ave up on the North Side. Hyde Park (By University of Chicago) is still integrated but Ground Zero for the obama fans.

THE SYSTEM-
Shot Spotter… Well, it’s a bunch of parabolic microphones spread out throughout the city. They triangulate gunfire. The system is updated constantly to differentiate between gunfire, fireworks and nail guns. Yes, in the beginning, there would be calls of “Shots fired, 27 shots at (insert address / cross street here)”, and you’d see the guy on the roof working away with a nail gun. However, the system has come a long way from that with constant updates and feedback from incidents on the street. The differentiations between actual gunshots and a car backfiring / nail gun / fireworks have gotten a lot better. Yes, it differentiates between gunfire and fireworks most of the time. Yes the system will get overloaded (New Years Eve). The system is tied into Google Earth and will give Officers working in the Shot Spotter Room an overlay map of the area, and a 10 foot circle of where the shots are fired from. Yes, it’s accurate to about +/- 10 feet, most of the time, it’s about 6 feet. It will show if the shots are coming from the sidewalk, the middle of the street, a gang-way, a back yard, or if it’s a moving shooter (dependent on speed, either car or on foot). It also records the gunfire, so someone that’s sharp who’s working in the room can pick up on different calibers. They can’t pinpoint what caliber it is, but you can tell by the sound of the shot that there’s a discernible difference between a “ping, ping, ping” of a .25 / .32, a “Pop, Pop, Pop” of say a 9mm and a “POP, POP, POP” of a .45 and a “Crack, Crack, Crack” of a 223-5.56 when you listen to the audio playback.
Tie this in with the Camera System that’s all over Chicago (IIRC, Chicago is the second most video survielled city next to London), the Shot Spotter Room might be able to get video if the shooting, the immediate aftermath of the shooting (ie. People running from the scene), or shortly after the shooting (ie. a fleeing car). Dependent upon which way the cameras are facing at the time of the shooting. Officers in the Shot Spotter room also have current information on gang conflicts in their District, which could help solve shootings, or at least get information out to officers on the street quicker. They pull up information on the location, victim, possible offender… rather quickly.
The lag time between actual “Shots Fired” and the hit on the computer is 30-45 seconds on average.
I don’t have the actual numbers, but the system is extremely helpful to the Police in matters related to shootings & homicides. Yes, it would “work better” if there was more manpower out on the street, but no one wants to be the Police anymore, and those that do want to stay as far away from the street as possible.

The system, as in any system, is only as good as its people working it. As SOFLAAC pointed out, yes, Officer Preston was shot and killed in her front yard. Shot Spotter picked up the shots, and a car was eventually dispatched. There are a few rumors- One prevalent one was the initial responding Officers didn’t see her laying on the ground as they just drove past. *** I don’t know, it didn’t happen in my District, It wasn’t my crime scene.*** However, I do have my theories as I may or may not know Detectives involved in the case, and officers in the District in which it happened. (That District is FULL of fuck-ups).

A CATALYST-
March 2021- Poor fucking 13 year old Adam Toledo, our loveable, laughable Latin King, affectionately known as “Lil Murder” by his fellow gang members, happened to be out at 2:30am with his cousin, just casually shooting at cars passing by where they were standing. This happened in a predominantly Mexican, Lower-Middle class neighborhood, constantly plagued by gang violence. Shot Spotter detected the shots, cars responded, and Officer E. Stillman was one of the first on scene. Stillman and his partner seen “Lil Murder” with the gun, Lil Murder took off on foot, Officer Stillman chased the fuck-twit. Toledo dropped the gun and quickly turned with his outstretched hands towards Officer Stillman. Officer Stillman had, according to Body Worn Camera Footage exactly .8 seconds to decide. End result; one less shit-stain on the fabric of society. A little Post Script- “Lil Murder’s” cousin gave Officers a different name for the recently expired gang member. It took “mom” 5 days to find out what happened to her precious turd. There are multiple screen shots from “mom’s” facebook account “liking” the Local Latin Kings facebook page, some of which showing her proud turd with either a crippling arthritis or throwing up gang signs. (I got $100 on gang signs) Ironically, her facebook page was taken down shortly after the shooting, but before the “wrongful death” lawsuit was filed against the Chicago Police Department and the Officers involved. Now this poor tragedy could have all been avoided if it wasn’t for that racist “Shot Spotter” technology! It caused this poor misunderstood youth to get gunned down by the racist ass police! I mean, Lil Murder didn’ do nuffin, and was just clownin’… at 2:30am. This incident also was the catalyst for a new Department policy on Foot Chases, which restricts Officers even further in what we can & can’t do in apprehending criminals. That was thanks to our last idiot-in-charge, lightfoot.

THE MAYOR-
First, I need to re-iterate Mayor Johnson’s statement that “He’s a black man, with a black wife, raising black kids on the west side of Chicago”, so once we get past his excuse for being inept, we’ll work on his mindset. He’s a black, democratic, progressive liberal, who believes in this “social justice” / “environmental justice” bullshit and ran his election campaign on those platforms, and stated when he ran for mayor, that he would cancel the racist “shot-spotter” program with the CPD. He’s a puppet for the Cook Co. Democratic Machine (Toni Preckwinkle), and controlled by Chicago Teachers Union. Oh, sorry, he’s probably off to some hospital way away from Chicago for “stress related” health problems.

Back to “Shot Spotter”;

https://www.theguardian.com/us...shotspotter-contract

“The system, which relies on an artificial intelligence algorithm and network of microphones to identify gunshots, has been criticized for inaccuracy, racial bias and law enforcement misuse. “
And
“Community public safety groups argued that the system sends police officers to predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods for often unnecessary and hostile encounters. “

The funny thing is: Chicago has them in every neighborhood… If you look at an overlay map of Chicago, interesting things tend to pop out… Let’s go back to the top of my rant, and Chicago being segregated by race & economics.
Then take a look at these maps:

https://heyjackass.com/2023-homicide-map/

https://bestneighborhood.org/race-in-chicago-il/

https://bestneighborhood.org/race-in-chicago-il/

You guys (and gals) are smart, I’m sure you can figure out a few things that a dumbass, knuckle-dragging street cop like me can’t… I just can’t find common denominators to these problems in the City… well, except for the racist technology.

My guess is the mayor doesn't want it, because the shots are coming from the "wrong" neighborhoods.

Yeah, about that...
Funny thing is that the actual decent people in the crime plagued communities are BEGGING for Shot-Spotter to stay.
I wonder why the media is only picking up on the useless aclu, the rabble-rousers, the "Community Organizers" that are speaking against this racist technology. Hmmm....

...and next year the Mayors office gets to say there were fewer "reported" gunshots. It'll be widely reported as success. Pay no attention to the actual number killed or wounded.

CPD, thanks for posting that info. We had a version of shot spotter down range that was useless and I had a poor opinion of the system. Your comments were eye opening.

Syracuse Police say ShotSpotter is worth it, even as Chicago and others drop contracts

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse Police maintain that ShotSpotter is a piece of technology they can't do without, designed to alert officers when and where a gun is fired.

Other major cities aren't so sure.

In Chicago, the city's Inspector General found that over 90% of the time, officers do not find evidence of a shooting after responding to a ShotSpotter alert. ABC7 Chicago's investigative unit found that 86% of the time, a ShotSpotter activation did not lead to any charges being filed against a possible shooter. These data points and other reports have led Chicago to sunset the program at the end of the summer this year.

Closer to Syracuse down the thruway, the Buffalo city government has officially abandoned deploying ShotSpotter. The national statistics helped sew doubt; in 2022, the organization Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (STOP) cited studies that found there's just one arrest for every 200 times that ShotSpotter is activated.

Syracuse Common Council Public Safety Committee Chair Chol Majok now has similar concerns.

"If it has not worked out there, it's an issue that we want to look at because we are spending resources on shot spotter."

Syracuse Police spend about $400,000 annually on the technology, with units deployed in the city's Southside and Northside neighborhoods. The contract for units in the south expires in March of 2027, while the northern contract goes until June next year.

According to Syracuse Police's top brass, ShotSpotter is a crucial tool for tackling shootings. First Deputy Chief Richard Schoff Jr. said that police are responding and finding evidence of 35% more shootings with ShotSpotter than they would relying on 911 calls alone. He said that while ShotSpotter by itself does not necessarily lead to instant arrests, he said it's part of the puzzle that has led to an overall drop in shooting victims in the city. The number of incidents of shootings with injury or death is down 56% compared to this time in 2023, according to SPD data.

Schoff said that when SPD briefly put a pause on ShotSpotter usage during the pandemic, facing budgetary constraints, it was a "disaster."

SPD officials also pushed back on making direct comparisons to other cities, claiming that Syracuse uniquely uses the technology. Locally, the department responds to every single ShotSpotter notification to recover potential evidence; the idea is that in other places, this doesn't necessarily happen, though officials at the meeting Tuesday admitted they hadn't seen the reports from Chicago.

Councilor Majok said he needs to start seeing more direct evidence that ShotSpotter is directly responsible for a drop in shootings before he can continue to throw his support behind the contracts, knowing that this year's budget negotiations will be difficult with ARPA dollars expiring.

Toledo Ohio utilizes Shotspotter. Thier PD is on On Patrol Live. Near everytime officers respond to a Shotspotter call half a dozen units show up, they walk around for twenty minutes looking for shell casings, usually give up and go back on patrol.
