Halloween candy
When I was growing up, we were always told to inspect our Halloween candy for needles. I started thinking about that today as we bought a mega bag of candy at Costco. Has anyone here ever found a needle in their candy, or know anyone who has?

Heard the stories also as a kid but never knew anyone that had a problem with their candy.

The only thing that was an issue was that one person each year that wanted to give out something healthy. Big Grin

Needles & razor blades. Candy had to be taken to the hospital to be xrayed Roll Eyes

We managed to eat most of it before it was confiscated for 'inspection'

I have only heard of a razor or needle being found in candy on the news. I have never known anyone who actually experienced it. It is very sad this is something that is a real potential threat.

It was razor blades and homemade candy when I was a kid. My folks would throw away any apples. Didn't see to much homemade candy just at home.

The stories I have seen seem to fall into the same category as "somebody painted swastikas on my house".

Mrs.BurtonRW, RN, left a 13 year hospital career this summer and now works at a much less stupid urgent care facility.

FWIW, they x-ray candy for free on Halloween. Pretty sure they’ve never found anything either, but the x-ray techs get a kick out of it... for the first five minutes. Then it’s just annoying, I’m told.

The kids love it.

I've fallen back on herbal tea bags in individually-sealed foil packets.

These days I man the grill at my brother's house. Adults can have a burger of freshly-ground 80/20. Dripping with fat.

When I was a kid the healthy (nasty) stuff went in the trash.

It does cross my mind. But then, fades away.

In our small town the community donates Alot! Of candy to the village. About 50 homes.
As we are the focus of about 400-/+ kids every Halloween in the village. (The PD nearly shut down threw traffic from 4-8.)
I have Had about 5000 pieces dropped pre Halloween so far, there is also a community bin for us to raid/get more if needed.

So we don’t buy any candy,(good socialism at work!)

But the concern is still there in a minor way. We do look at all the bags, so far no issues.

Short of x-raying your kids sugary hauls, how does one identify stuff concealed in confections?

Not a concern in your area. It’s Patient First that x-rays them. Lol.

I believe it used to just involve manual inspection by parents. Toss anything that looks like it might have been opened or anything homemade (unless you know the person) and enjoy the rest.

A very strong magnet might catch needles and razor blades (although some needles are stainless steel and not magnetic).
