I remembered doing these many years ago, and want to get another one going but forgot how; LOL. Anyone remember doing these or getting one? I remember a member put in 500 rounds of 9 or .45 in one of the stops

I remember. It never made it to me.
I forgot who quit and made off with all the goods.

Hey Dave,

The last couple times we tried this it did not end well. There were members who really got into the spirit of it and others who simply participated to profit from it. Depending on who last had the box really made a difference on what ending up coming to the next person. I sent some pretty cool stuff for the initial shipment of the last one and was saddened to see what some members had to choose from when it finally got to them.

Most frustrating was the sometimes weeks it would take to get it shipped off to the next person, often with a complaint of how heavy it was getting and how much it cost to ship.

Forgive me for being a downer, but I was really surprised at what I saw; especially the last person to receive it, who I believe still posts here, and never acknowledged receiving it.

I’ll not comment anymore on this topic, but I at least wanted to post a friendly reminder.

I too was wondering about where it ended up. I had a pile of stuff to contribute back then. Never got the chance...

I remember it starting, and I did not participate.

Unfortunately, it only takes one bad apple to ruin a thing like that, and almost every group has a bad apple, no matter how good the rest are.

If you kept the travelling box, shame on you.

Indeed. We've been through this three times (at least!), and the sad truth is that it never ends well.

The first one (at least as far I can recall) petered out, but I don't remember the circumstances, and that thread is too old and was pruned.

It was then revived in 2014, but that eventually petered out as well after a 3-4 year run, with some accompanying drama and some admonishments from Para.

It was then briefly revived a third time by Arcwelder in 2018, who tracked down and recovered the original box and planned to ride herd over the process to help prevent the issues that had plagued the first two, but that very rapidly petered out again with accompanying drama and similar admonishments from Para.

No sense in giving it a fourth shot, just to repeat history yet again. Not worth all the drama over what quickly just becomes a box of dusty junk.

Karmas are a great thing... just stick to individual Karmas.

I was one of the last recipients of the previous box. Towards the end there, the box was getting pretty big (size wise) and really heavy with stuff that really wasn't worth sending.

I culled the box, reducing the weight by a third or so, repackaged it into a heavy duty box, and sent it on. I think I shed 3 lbs in just packing tape and beat up packaging.

I can't recall, but I think Para even put the kabosh on it in the end because of the amount of drama.

It's sad, but, even on a forum with membership that probably has a higher-than-average degree of integrity, there's still going to be the occasional bad apple.

I remember watching the box roll around the country, though.

I was one of the lucky? members who received the first box, somewhere between 20th and 30th in line. I remember that it was kind of fun, but there wasn't really much in the box that was worth the postage. I took out a few items. I donated a few things to my local range (eye protection, etc.), and added a few (essentially worthless) items to the box, and sent it on.

I also remember the heat level when the box paused in its travels a few months after it came to me. What started as a camaraderie-building experiment ended in a meltdown sufficient to erase any goodwill built up by those who participated. I suspect the member who retained the box did not do so from greed or ill-will, just disinterest, laziness, and procrastination.

Kind of a tragedy of the commons kind of incident, probably best not repeated.

Didn't participate in any of these. Had seen similar evolutions elsewhere that never seemed to work out either.

I was the creator of the "SIGforum Rolling Karma." The package contained a book for everyone to add an entry into, a Penguin doll named Madison for every one to take a picture with and post here, and a, 'take something, leave something box.'

To this day, I know who the last recipient was, and he is not going to give it up. I've resigned myself to that.

What a great concept. What a great idea. Thank you David for thinking of this again.

Unfortunately, it's genius was only precluded by it's monumental failure.

A somewhat similar story.

At a previous job, everyone's office and cubicle had a nameplate that slipped in and out of the holder.

As a gag, I pilfered one guys nameplate and since we had offices across the country, it was mailed from one person to another.

Periodically pictures would be sent back via email showing the nameplates travel journey.

This included weddings, dinners, and other outdoor adventures in NY, TX, FL, CO and other states.

It was a fun inside joke until all of our colleagues quit or got laid off.

The driving force that makes capitalism great - individuals in pursuit of their self-interests - is what dooms similar endeavors no matter how noble the intent.

Mathematically, the optimal process would be each person to add back value to the box equal to the value they took out. If the value added back is less than the value taken out, the box eventually dwindles to zero value and dies out. If value added back is more than the value taken out, eventually someone's going to have to take out more value out than what they put in. But if everyone puts back the same value as what they took out, then everyone just spends money for the shipping costs which takes away value from everybody.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I recall that the box had gotten into quite rough shape & was split into 2 boxes.

Embarrassingly, 1 of them has been buried in my house for a while, and this post reminded me. After some digging, I've located the box I received from a member in the N Austin area & will contact one of the members on the list that was enclosed, and get at lease this half back on the road.

Ashamed to say that it got buried in our house at a time when things were pretty hectic here. I remember it taking me quite a while to even get around to opening the box.
I've since added a few items & will try to check user posting history of those enclosed to see if they're still active.

Sorry to have been half the cause of this great thing ending, but hopefully we can get it rolling again.

Yep, I'll admit I dropped the ball on it, but getting it rolling now.
Should have it back on the road tomorrow afternoon.

Might be worth starting a new thread for it to get a fresh list of active participants. The list I have was only email addresses & not forum handles, so hard to gauge who is still an active member.
