I asked this in the ammo section though have gotten no response so I figured I’d ask here. I acquired a 410 pistol the other day as I felt it was pretty inexpensive for how much fun it looked and figured why not? Shotshells are plentiful I thought. Well holy bleep was I wrong, 410 is no where to be found. Looked online and it’s mostly out of stock everywhere though when I could locate it it’s like a buck a shot and after taxes and shipping it equates to almost $1.50/rd. I know it’s not even remotely as mass produced as 12 or even 20 gauge, but is this the norm?
Yeah. It is crazy hard to locate .410 or 20 gauge around here. Been that way for at least 3-5 years now. When you do it is much more expensive than 12 gauge. A while back you could find .410 and 20 everywhere. Not so much anymore. Now what surprises me, around here at least, is the ease of finding 16 and 28 gauge!!
I made some 410 brass shells out of 9.3x74r rifle cases.
My 410 has a 3” chamber so these come up a little short-which is ok. Just primed them with pistol primers( my shotgun wouldn’t fire rifle primers-they are harder) 10grains of green dot and some grits on top, pointed straight up. Pop, voila brass 410 cases.
They are a little bigger inside than a 410 plastic hull, but I’m using powder, fiber wad, shot, thin card glued. No rolling the edge of the case. They work fine.
What kind of pistol did you get?

^^^^^ It’s a Rossi Brawler single shot break action .410/45LC and I thought it was equally dumb and cool though imagined myself having a lot of fun so the cool part won out in the end. For $200 it was worth a try. Finding out about the ammo situation has taken some of the wind out of my sail.
I have 2 Progressive Shot shell presses in my basement, One is in 410 and the other is 28 gauge, the two calibers I shoot the most. So anytime I need some 410 shells all I have to do is go downstairs and build some, takes about 5 minutes to load up a box on the progressive. BTW with 1/2 ounce of shot it costs me 6.36 per box.
I've stopped counting.

I remember a few times it became hard to get over the last 20 years or so. I switched exclusively to 28 ga. for dove season about 10 years ago because of it. Haven't tried to buy any since.

Around here in DFW, I have no problems finding various 20 gauge loads. Our home defense shotguns are 20 gauge, my wife handles the load better than 12 gauge, and I have zero problems with it as a defensive caliber. My go to store in DFW always keep 20 gauge in stock- #2 and 3 buckshot, birdshot, slugs, etc. Now not as plentiful as 12 gauge but the stuff is on the shelves. But .410? That is quite different, the store I mentioned carries over a dozen different boxes of 20 gauge, but only four of .410, and at twice the price of 20 g.

That's awesome! I reload shotgun shells but I'm all set up on 12 gauge.
"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown
