Pipe SmokerWealthy Louisiana residents win right to form their own city
“Wealthy white Baton Rouge residents have won a decade-long court battle to split from poorer neighborhoods and form their own city with plans for better schools and less crime.
The Louisiana Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the new City of St George could move forward with incorporation, splitting off from the rest of Baton Rouge.
St George will have 86,000 residents across a 60-square-mile area in the southeast of East Baton Rouge Parish and will have its own Mayor and city council.
Supporters of the new city say that the existing city-parish government is poorly run, with high crime rates and bad schools.
Opponents say the movement is 'racist' [of course they say that] and will create a 'white enclave' as it separates a wealthy area of the city from the majority Black city and school district. …”

parabellumExcellent. I'm very glad to see this and hope to see more of it in major cities all over this country.

nhracecraftToo bad that there wasn't a similar outcome for the residents of Buckhead in GA. Perhaps they'll get another chance at some point to determine their own destiny like those of St George, LA.

marksman41What happened to Buckhead's efforts? The last I heard it sounded like they were going to be successful.

snwghstEast Baton Rouge has been sucking them dry for years. Raising taxes because they well off to support the failed policy’s of EBR and make connected ones rich while screwing over the predominantly minority public schools etc etc (minority IS the majority in EBR)

2000Z-71Good, gives me hope for Eagle Exit. Eagle River is trying to break away from the Municipality of Anchorage. They've been trying for years but Anchorage has been fighting tooth and nail. The recent separation of Sandy Springs, GA is being used as the example. I'm tired of having the 5th highest property tax rate in the country and getting very little in return for it.

tatortoddThe opposite has been occurring for decades in Texas. Large Texas cities annexing unincorporated areas. For example, Houston annexed Kingwood (master planned community of about 40,000 people) in '96 and it was very unpopular for reasons such as water bills tripled for Kingwood residents. Houston's mayor openly spoke about the increase in tax base being a driver for the annexation.
'99, '17 and '19 legislation reform made it harder for big cities like Houston to annex.
I'd like to see portions of cities (e.g. Kingwood) be able to secede. Especially when they're in a different county that the big city.
