My cars both have autonomous data. They of course have gps nav, but they also report various maintenance and other information over the internet. Via their app on my phone I can see all kinds of things, especially on the newest vehicle. This is all coming across the internet. I can query the vehicle status with the app (locked, windows open, fuel remaining, etc).

They have done a good job of creating an app that younger folks might really enjoy, just like they use apps for all kinds of things that seem ridiculous to me.

Guy at my church just bought a new 2024 Honda CRV. While driving on a trip the steering wheel vibrating and told him he needed to take a break and get some coffee. Sponsored by Starbucks?

Like some of the other posts, I’ve got no desire for technology in my vehicle, at all. Our freaking phones are bad enough spilling our PII and other data all thru who know where and to whom.

I recently came back from Europe, where my rental car agreement said I had to inform the company if I was taking the car outside of Germany. I opted not to, figuring, if they caught me, I'd just say my plans changed. Not only did I pay for electronic toll decals by registering the car online in Austria, Slovenia and Switzerland, I have already received a photo radar ticket from Austria, forwarded to me by the rental agency. And I know I have another one coming from Switzerland. They haven't said anything about my taking the car out of Germany.

Until people get fed up and complain to their elected representatives it will only get worse.
But that won't happen, there's too much money involved. I don't need a big screen on my dash,
don't need a backup camera. I'll try to find old cars with low milage. Most younger people
have their phones glued to their hand. I don't get it.

In my Acura, I did a search and found the SIM card.
Removed it.

Screw them.
Also when I first got the car, I refused letting it have access to my text messages and contacts, etc.

I was TDY in Germany back in the mid '80s driving thru a town in the early evening and got a bright flash in my face. Kept driving and saw the photo/camera. It was the night before I returned. Never got anything.

I've been back to Germany several times in the past 15 years and never been arrested on an outstanding warrant. Big Grin

Turns out the rental agency has a digit off in my address and forwarded that to the five issuing authorities. Probably why I haven't received the actual tickets in the mail yet, and they are surely long overdue and incurring late fees now.

IT won't do a bit of good doing this. Because if you have a phone in your pocket that thing tracks a LOT more than what your car tracks and one day soon it will report everything to the Government.

BTW, my Daily Driver is a 2019 Ford Fiesta ST that lacks the NAV option and may be the very last car to not have ANY tracking or Nanny features. Good thing too because it will do 143 mph and can get to over 100 mph a lot more quickly than most would suspect.

I've stopped counting.

The newer Toyota/Lexus cars have esims locked to AT&T.

People are disabling them.

It does disable some of the electronic features but the people don't care.

I have no illusions of privacy and have a cell phone so I don't bother screwing with it as long as it is not a subscription.
