A city man who police say tried to rob a convenience store Saturday later told the clerk to call 911 and went outside to wait on the sidewalk for officers to arrive, Johnson City police said in a news release.

Jay Payne, 55, no address available, was charged with attempted robbery after a report at the Scotchman at 1101 E. Unaka Ave.

Police said a male came into the store and told the clerk he was there to rob her and had a gun, police said, adding that the man was hiding his hand behind his back while making the statement. He then told the clerk to call 911, police said.

Payne was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where he was held in lieu of $50,000 bond. His Sessions Court arraignment is set for Monday, July 24, at 1:30 p.m.

I can only guess he wanted to go to jail. Confused I suppose there is a certain twisted logic about it. He'll get three hots and a cot and a structured routine for a couple of years or more.

They're coming to take me away, Ha-ha
They're coming to take me away, Ho-ho
Hee-hee-haa-haa
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see those
Nice young men in their clean white coats and
They're coming to take me away, ha-ha!

Sounded like he was trying to get arrested.

I know a guy who was somewhat in a similar situation. Long story short he was given home monitoring instead of having to stay in jail until the trial. Term of being released home was he couldn't leave the home for any reason and no internet. He got on the internet. He implied to his brother that he wanted to go to jail.

He had no job, no future and felt that jail was really the way he could feel secure in at least having 3 hots, a cot and medical care. He had burned his bridges bad enough to not be able to go back home (which he mother would've liked).

This, some homeless would prefer to have 3 hot meals, cable tv, and a roof over their heads.

I once worked with a guy who did this up in Washington. He said he knew several who did that. You have 3 meals, a bed, and you just get to play cards all day. Especially come winter time.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I assume jails are air-conditioned these days. It has been 90 degrees or more the last few days. Maybe he wanted to cool off. Razz

If you want to go to jail and need a place to stay you throw a brick through a window in view of the cops. What this guy did reflects a psychiatric problem. The amount of time for a crime such as this is quite substantial and not likely to be pleasant.

The jails have become psychiatric holding facilities since there are few alternatives for these individuals.
