Got laid off in 2023, Wife does not work. We did a 2 month road trip.

Two weeks driving to the West Coast from MD. We stayed in Huntington Beach for a month and took two weeks driving back.

We hit a bunch of National Parks on the way out and back. It was epic and hoping to do it again in another year or two after retirement.

8-10 days is max I've ever been able to get away, so a couple of those; Yellowstone, Italy, France.

Plans underway for Australia/NZ in a couple years after retired. Planning 3+ weeks there. And really looking forward to it!

Other plans in next few years are a multi-week drive up eastern seaboard followed by a 1-2 week stay in Maine, trip back via some inland route TBD.

Before this year, a few 7-day cruises.

This year, we went to Rome. 9 days total from departure to return, with a day lost in airport purgatory in Munich.

Wife & I are planning a similar trip for our 20th anniversary in '30
-Germany for a couple days: I want to do the Nurburgring and the Mercedes museum
-Italy for a few days to see the things we wanted to spend more time on, but were difficult with 3 kids in tow, and to possibly get Pompei, Florence and Ferrari in
-England for a few days: We've both been in the early 00s. Wouldn't mind making it over to Diddly Squat and the Farmer's Dog.

My honeymoon to Fiji. 1 week each at 2 different resorts.

We decided many years ago 7 days isn't enough time for our normal yearly vacations. The first and last days are usually lost to travel. We now try for 10 - 11 days for vacation. Usually Thursday - Monday or Tuesday (10 - 12 days later). We also don't like to travel on Saturday or Sunday as those are usually much busier.

We're never sorry we opted for 10 - 12 days over 7!

My longest was two weeks in 1992. I usually took 10 day vacations so this was a small stretch. Another couple and I took our boats from NJ to Block Island, RI, to Martha's Vineyard, to Nantucket, to Cape Cod, to Newport, to Montauk and back. It was a great vacation, we both had 30 ft boats and were some of the smaller ones venturing so far.

Longest planned vacation was 2 weeks for lobster season in the Keys. Unplanned would be living in Ireland for 2 months after a heart attack and double bypass surgery. That was only supposed to be a 5 day trip...

took the whole summer off, 9 weeks total, when I got fired in 2012. Best summer ever.

Would recommend doing it.

More recently: 4 weeks to go to the caribic. Was fantastic. While I did take my work-phone with me I didn't check my mails, only bothered to send some photos to some colleagues.

just did the longest. 31 days in a row. Went to Virginia Beach only for the birth of my fifth and final child. Next year I plan on taking six weeks off to visit my son in Italy. Assuming the Army sends him back there.

30 day RV trip during my final sabbatical. Did the Badlands, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, Mammoth Cave, the Corvette Museum in Kentucky (before the sinkhole sucked the cars down), and other stuff I'm probably forgetting.

Does three months in Las Vegas count, on a work assignment where I did not have to do anything except show up for an eight hour shift and sit in a quiet corner and read a book?

1968: First field installation of a new telephone Central Office by International Tel & Tel -- A-1 Metaconta system, designed to compete with AT&T's Number 5 Crossbar. A design engineer from each major component of the system was on site to correct any design problems found during installation testing.

I had total responsibility for all trunk circuits and coin (pay phone) control circuits. Of course, the system components designed by V-Tail worked flawlessly Smile , so my work assignment was just being there, "just in case."

A three month all expense paid stay in Las Vegas. All of the salary and expense reimbursement checks from the company went straight to a savings account; I was able to pay for all my lodging, meals, car rental, entertainment, and all other costs with my take from the blackjack tables.

My longest vacation was 8 days over Christmas in 2019 to Disney Works with my 11 and 12 year old kids and their mom. It was a phenomenal trip. I’m not really a fan of Disney but it was pretty awesome with my two kids.

I haven’t had a vacation longer than 3 days since, but just booked a 7 night Alaskan cruise for next summer with the kids who will be 18 and 20 and their mom and I’m really excited about it. I’m not married to their mom anymore but we get along really well so it should be a good time.

In 1991 I got 7 weeks. In 1992 I got 5 weeks. Both times I rode my motorcycle from the Oregon Coast to Sturgis. Both times I had enough time after Sturgis to ride in every state west of the Mississippi. Nebraska had the friendliest people. I stopped in one town in Nebraska and some guy was standing next to my bike when I returned because of the Oregon licence plate. Turned out he was a retired logger from here.

Don’t think I’ve ever been on vacation longer than two weeks, but I’ve done 2 weeks at a stretch countless times in Florida, once each in Australia, Ecuador/Galapagos, and Africa (SA, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana).

With the exception of Galapagos and Africa, I’ve always been ready to come back probably a week and a half in. My work doesn’t stop and I know what’s going to be waiting for me when I get back.
