Well, if I stole $5K from the bank I'd probably be doing time. How come it is different for them? WRT to going the social media route, yes, this has occurred to me, but I am very reluctant to hitch my wagon to some sketchy social media outlet. Too many repercussions, I already get thousands of spams/day.

I have said it before on the Forum, Chase Bank is the WORST. In one dealing with them on my Moms estate, the refused the form I sent because it did not have the word "the" estate of ...I left off THE and they ghosted me. I learned from this, they told me, they do not respond to citizen/customer requests but DO respond to lawyers. Yes. If you kept an overpayment you could be charged with theft as it is against several different laws over the years. The bank is doing just that, by hook or by crook. "the meaning of life, is to give life meaning" ✡ Ani Yehudi אני יהודי Le'olam lo shuv לעולם לא שוב!

I believe he's indirectly suggesting focusing on complaining effectively. As a comparison: Here is a good article titled, "The 9 Habits of Highly Effective Complainers" and it even includes my previous suggestion of complaining directly to someone (i.e. branch manager) with power to make changes you seek. Chase is going after the people from the ATM scam they had over the summer. I’m sure they will use this as an excuse albeit a poor one. “There is love in me the likes of which you’ve never seen. There is rage in me the likes of which should never escape." —Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) regulates Chase Bank in Virginia. I would file a complaint with them. Something similar happened to someone at Bank of America, years ago They took them to small claims court. Won, the bank still wouldn't pay. He had a sheriff's sale at a bank branch to collect the judgment. They came running out with a t check, it was on the news. 5K or under for small claims court in VA, no lawyer needed.

Take it to small claims court yourself. Won’t be very time consuming at all. You already have all the documentation. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Needs a check up from the neck up |
I have an escrow company and we handle thousands of checks and wires a year so I am very familiar with this stuff. Normally at chase you need to present ID like insert a debit card to access any teller services. What did you use there. One of the points there is to make sure the teller does not switch where the money is deposited, IE frank is making a deposit and the teller puts it into her own account. First off what does your statement say for the deposit day at chase, is there any record of activity there. What does the receipt say as to where the money went?? I think it likely got applied to a different account you have with chase, like a credit card or a mortgage loan. Check those statements first. If you don't find it in any of your other chase account, then walk in demand the branch manager and flat out accuse the teller of theft until proven otherwise. also USAA should be able to generate an electronic record of how they sent the money to chase. there is a transaction record somewhere that you can get, it just might take a few days or a week for them to generate that. __________________________ The entire reason for the Second Amendment is not for hunting, it’s not for target shooting … it’s there so that you and I can protect our homes and our children and and our families and our lives. Back when then there mostly bank tellers, it was a big deal if a teller’s drawer was off by one cent. I’d be upset if this happened to me. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." It appears this has been going on for over a year, they are controlling the situation. Do not let them do that. The longer this goes, the less likely you will see your money. This is your money, you should dictate how things are done. Force them to deal with it. Bank lost a deposit once. We tried the phone route, got no where. We went and sat in front of the manager and told him we will leave when the situation is resolved. Two hours later, the problem was resolved.

So my most recent message from Chase on the online portal ends with: "we will no longer respond to this specific inquiry." At least they are admitting to their ghosting practices. Insulting, to put it mildly. I have a face-to-face meeting with a "banker" scheduled for Wed., we'll see how that goes. They will have to trespass me to get me out of there without a resolution.

. File two complaints with the Consumer Federal Protection Borad (CFPB), they submit your complaint to Chase on your behalf. The CFPB is a bank regulator with the authority to fine Chase. www.ConsumerFinance.gov/complaint/ Chase must respond within 15 days and provide a final response by 60 days. First complaint is about the missing $5,000. Leave out all the fluff and commentary about Chase. This complaint is about the missing money. Second complaint is on the failure of Chase to resolve your complaint without having to work through the CFPB after one year and multiple attempts. Document all the wasted time and multiple submission of the same material over and over and getting no resolution. for each complaint: Be direct and upload PDF copies of your: Wait to file the second complaint until the first complaint is resolved. You never know, maybe the money was returned to USAA weeks later but you missed the entry on your statement. Maybe the money went to pay a Chase credit card my mistake. Save copies of everything including printing copies of your complaint filed through CFPB. If you're really pissed at Chase, after you get your money back and after your second complaint is addressed and you get an apology (maybe), give copies of everything to your local news outlets offering to be interviewed about your horrible experience. I expect they will do a story on this, especially if you get your money back due to the complaint being submitted through the CFPB .

Depending on how this ends, be prepared for the bank to close your account. If you cause too much trouble for them, they won't want to do business with you anymore. Have another bank ready to switch your business too just in case

You are of course right, but I would have the next bank spun up ahead of time and would only delay moving to be a current customer while leaning on the branch manager. Once the situation was resolved, I would very quickly become a former customer.

I have no intention of staying with Chase after the disrespect they've shown. I already have a couple of other banks I work with so that isn't a problem, but I do have an automatic deposit set up with Chase, Prob. take a couple of months to cut that over. ETA: After a careful review of all my Chase accounts, it appears that they did credit the deposit, but to a different account than the one I wanted it to go to. Not that Chase was any help in finding this out. I may still file a complaint about how they treated my inquiry, and I intend to terminate my relationship with Chase, but I now consider the matter of a "missing" $5K closed. Thanks to all the SF members who weighed in on this, I really do appreciate your time and attention. And sorry to have taken up forum bandwidth on what has turned out to be a non-issue.

What the hell Chase. Either you were able to clear the check with the bank it was written on or you weren't. Doesn't take over a year to figure it out.
