mark123Measuring for a new screen door
Let's say I want to replace the old screen door at my place. Do I measure the actual door or the trim around it or add/subtract something from the trim to account for what's under the trim?
Any info for a DIY?

flesheatingvirusI think it depends upon what your are replacing it with. You could get just a door or a kit that includes a frame. I would measure the opening with the trim and compare that to the opening specs for the item you are looking to purchase.
That's what I did before I installed a glass storm door in my front door opening.

arfmelWood screen door? I measure the opening and buy that size. Because of the amateur carpenters that have worked on this house, I nearly always have to smallify the new door a bit with a saw before I paint and install it.

OutnumberedMy crews install quite a few Larson and Andersen storm and screen doors. This is a pretty good how to guide for a DIYer
https://www.larsondoors.com/st...doors-how-to-measureYou're basically measuring the brickmold/frame opening that the z-bar mounts to. There's a narrow range that each door size will accommodate.

arcwelderMeasure the exact size of the hole, being the area where the frame will attach. Don't add or subtract anything. They'll have a chart with the size range each door will fit in.
