Cruising the Highway to Hell |
https://www.espn.com/racing/in...0-winner-dies-age-87 Bobby Unser, a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner and part of the only pair of brothers to win "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," has died. He was 87. He died Sunday at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, of natural causes, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway said Monday. Unser won the Indy 500 in 1968, 1975 and 1981. "He is part of the Mount Rushmore of Indy," said Dario Franchitti, another three-time Indy 500 winner. Younger brother Al Unser is one of only three drivers to win the Indy 500 four times -- 1970, 1971, 1978 and 1987. The Unser family tradition stretched to Al Unser's son, Al Unser Jr., who won the Indy 500 in 1992 and 1994. “Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves.” ― Ronald Reagan Retired old fart

To all of you who are serving or have served our country, Thank You |
Bobby should not have had the credit for the 1981 win! He passed eight cars coming out of the pits during the caution. His lawyers got him that win.

Only the strong survive |
I put a UHF radio in his car at the Pocono 500 in 1972 while working at GE Mobile Radio in Ft. Washington, PA. There were others like the late Mark Donohue, who had a CB radio, and another racer had a VHF radio. The UHF radio was the only one that worked successfully due to the ignition noise. Bobby's turbine went out and he was not able to finish the race. 41

I was a Bobby and Al fan as a youngster. My dad and I watched them at the old Ontario Motor Speedway. This was back when beer cans had a full removable tab. Those were freedom days. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

Honor and Integrity |
I met Bobby Unser in 2003 when he spoke at AMSOIL's 30th anniversary convention. He was very down to earth and approachable to talk to when the convention was finished. What I remember most is the years following that first meeting with him, he would always remember my name.
