"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Well, it can last for up to 25 years at least!

My crazy prepper mom decided to upgrade her home freeze dryer to the latest more efficient version and gave me her old one as an early Christmas present. It was surprise to me though, I happened to be in the Bay area on business, dropped by to take them to dinner and ended up leaving with a large high-tech appliance riding in my back seat back to OR! Big Grin

It is a little loud and messy (so it's in the garage), but on my 4th load, so far so good.

I am starting to have doubts about the longevity of FD food-the 25 year long at least, though in any analysis I'm sure it's going to be a lot longer than canning and dehydration at any rate.

Slow is ok. My area seems to get a direct hit from a major hurricane about once every 20 years and we just had Michael so I should be good for a while...

Strambo:

As long as you're getting all of the water out, there's no reason it shouldn't last that long. Just pack it right.

I vacuum seal a lot of things in Mason jars and heat seal anything else in zip-lock mylar bags with oxygen absorbers.

I don't doubt that mine will last that long, although timely rotation of stock is never a bad idea.

And yeah, it is much better than canning and dehydration in that the nutrients and taste stay in...in addition to the longevity.

Some things, though, just don't freeze dry and/or reconstitute well. Just experiment with it and you'll figure out what works for you and what doesn't.
