When you put it back use a bit of starting fluid to start (with fresh gas).
Has worked about 95% of the times I have done it.
I used the Yamaha brand carb cleaner and an ultrasonic, it worked great on my ATV carbs. No additive is going to clean out residue from gas being evaporated from the carb, but it is worth a try.

For the benefit of the uninformed, when you say "the dog feces that you can buy at the average gas station", are you talking about non-ethanol gas or the regular (automotive) stuff? And if you're talking about non-ethanol, what exactly is the problem with it as compared to 100LL from the airport?
Non ethanol is good gas, here in Florida it's usually only 90 octane. However it only has a shelf life of about 6 months without additives.
100LL has a lot longer shelf life without additives and is 100 octane. The low lead in it does have a tendancy to foul plugs IF you idle a lot (not an issue with a generator).
Gas with ethanol has a much shorter shelf life than both and has a tendancy to absorb water when sitting if it has the chance.
