Sergeant Roy Tachias died this afternoon at the age of 89. He was a Korean War Hero dubbed the One Man Army by Stars and Strips and a close family friend. So sad to see these guys go.
Here is a short excerpt of his story and a link.

He estimates there were around 50 Chinese troops heading straight for him.

“So I grabbed some hand grenades and started slinging them,” he said.

He also peppered the men with rifle fire.

By the end of his singular assault, 33 were dead and he’d even taken a prisoner.

The remaining troops fled in disarray.

RIP
Thank you for your service
Thank you for posting this.. It is an incredible story of perseverance and bravery..

Sorry for your loss.

I have been studying warfare of some form or the other since I was old enough to read, and I swear the Korean War was a meat grinder. If the terrain wasn't against you, it was the enemy, and if it wasn't the enemy it was the weather..

God Bless men such as these.

I imagine there was quite a welcoming committee on the other side to greet him.

Sorry for your loss.

I just finished a book called “Give Me Tomorrow”. Although it deals with USMC exploits at Chosin, I can only imagine every US service memeber went through something similar in Korea.

RIP, Sgt. Tachias

RIP, Sgt. Tachias, what an inspiration!

I would agree that the Korean war was a meat grinder and for those who don't know always considered a minor operation.

When I was in 2nd ID I was on a remote radio team for a couple months. This basically meant we had a 4 man team (only one M60...made in 19fucking63 Roll Eyes) , a big fucking antenna (aka "arty beacon") on top of a 300-500M hill. Most of the ones we worked on had trenches pre-dug with range cards painted on rocks.

I cannot imagine looking down those hills seeing human waves coming at me. Those of you that have been north of Seoul understand how that part of the country is all rigged to blow or delay the norcoms.

When I was the COs driver I asked him during one our many alerts "Sir, what do we do if the balloon really does go up?" his answer "drive south" Cool

I always liked him

The Korean war. Stalin's War to test us. Truman's Police Action. Call it whatever you want, it was a meat grinder.

Some 10 years ago I had a Chinese neighbor in her early '60's who told me about the young Chinese soldiers (volunteers} who returned from Korea with no feet, due to amputation from frostbite. The Chinese government then forced young girls to marry these vets to care for them.

I was in Seoul when it snowed. We wore wool GI clothing and I still was cold from the dampness.

The locals lived in paper shacks with little or no heat.

Everyone suffered at that time.

I like to watch the videos on youtube about former servicemen who received the medal of honor. You can stipulate WWII, or Korean War, or any other. This gentleman sounds A LOT like another that I found "out there". Amazing guys.... desperate times... and completely sacrificial service. What we owe them can never be repaid....FredT
