I am renting a pretty expensive piece of equip for a week. The renting company asked for a coi on my ho homeowners insurance. Not sure I am comfortable with that. The rental fee is over $1k. Don't they have their owner insurance on their eq. Figured into the cost of the rental? "Practice like you want to play in the game"

They likely have insurance that covers the loss of their equipment due to theft or damage, but once it’s in your possession likely want you to be responsible for it. That would include liability should you cause an injury or other damage as you operate it. I have policy provisions on my company insurance that covers these things, which is likely why I’ve never been asked as far as home owners is concerned.

COI is fairly typical on all projects. The purpose of asking for your COI isn't to protect the equipment (the homeowner's insurance isn't likely to cover it anyway). The COI is to prove that you have a homeowner's policy to cover your damage to your own property or injury to others while on your property. They aren't really concerned about damage to the equipment. They're concerned about you running someone over with it, and that third party suing the bejeezus out of everyone. Your homeowners policy typically covers accidents on your own property to third parties. If you were doing work on a property not owned by you, they'd ask for a general liability policy AND a COI from the owners of the property.
