I’ve done the following to secure steel cables high up in a few oak trees. First, I used a spinning rod to cast a bullet weight over a high limb. The monofilament line was then used to draw a ski rope back over the high limb. The ski rope was then used to pull the cable over the limb.
In your case, I’d use the light monofilament to pull a heavier test monofilament over a limb. I would then tie the fishing line to the end of the heavy rope that supports your display. The rope could be pulled up to but NOT over the limb. The heavy fishing line should be strong enough to support your Halloween item. Wrap the excess line around the tree to hide it. If your display weighs enough the fishing line will be slippery enough to allow you to lower your masterpiece back to the ground and recover your fishing line. YMMV
