I'm used to seeing US Warship names starting with USS such as USS Missouri, USS Enterprise, USS Ronald Reagan, USS Stark.

I noted the two hospital ships are USNS such as USNS Mercy, USNS Comfort. Why the different prefix?

Not Navy, but Marine Corps.

The USS means it is a commissioned ship and run by Navy personnel.

The USNS (US NAVAL SHIP) are not commissioned ships and are not expected to be involved in combat situations.

USNS ships are Navy owned auxiliary ships but are operated by the Military Sealift Command and are manned by civilians.

USNS crew eat better. Menus, stewarts that take your order - good food. The ones I rode, everyone had staterooms.

Yup.

As cadets, we all wanted to get on those hospital ships during our sea year at the Academy. All those nurses...

Instead i ended up on the USNS Concord. Still had a great time though sailing around the Med.

Yes- I was enlisted in the US Navy and Stationed on the USNS Vanguard. We had stewards, great food and 2 man staterooms.
