A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged in an incident involving methamphetamines at Michigan State University, prompting the closure of Wells Hall, the largest academic building on campus, this week.

Xin Tong faces charges of malicious destruction of property over $20,000 and operating or maintaining a methamphetamine lab, state police said in a news release. He is being held at the Ingham County Jail on a $500,000 cash surety bond. It is not clear whether Tong has an attorney.

Campus Public Safety Chief Mike Yankowski said at a news conference Wednesday that the incident involved an unknown substance found on flooring and doors throughout the building in East Lansing.

At around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, campus police responded to a report of possible trespassing. Officers found Tong on the fifth floor with four or five backpacks and duffel bags, Yankowski said.

Police obtained a search warrant and found "several labeled and unlabeled containers of an unknown liquid substance inside," the safety chief said.

The news release identified the substances as sodium hydroxide pellets, hydrochloric acid, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone and butane. Police said the substances can be purchased legally online and in stores.

Police asked additional law enforcement agencies for assistance, including the East Lansing Fire Department, which conducted testing and air control inside the hall.

Wells Hall was closed out of an abundance of caution. It will remain closed until Friday, and exams have been moved and rescheduled, the school said in a statement.

Yankowski said the building sustained significant property damage, which state police described as directly related to the alleged criminal activity.

Yankowski declined to say whether Tong is a student or a faculty member. The incident remains under investigation.

And the University of Michigan has busted Chinese students doing unauthorized experiments with smuggled infectious disease materials and nothing much has been done about it.

And remember, these are the only the ones that got caught

""Multiple tests performed by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) confirm the environment in Wells Hall does not pose a risk to our community," MSU police said.

Officials later clarified that a meth lab was never located inside Wells Hall."

If this is the same Xin Tong, according to this, he's an MD PhD at the medical school.
Your link is for the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI). The meth lab incident occurred 60+ miles away at Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI).

I went on Michigan State's website and ran a search for Xin Tong and for many years everything about him is associated with 3D facial recognition.

News reports say the guy is a former student.

Suspect in MSU meth lab bust was former student with expired ID card
Excerpt:
"EAST LANSING — The man arrested by Michigan State University police on charges related to methamphetamine at the largest academic building on campus was in possession of an expired student identification card but had no apparent current affiliation with the school. Xin Tong, 31, is not a current MSU student and hasn't been enrolled since 2022, Ingham County Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Nicole Matusko told a judge on Wednesday, April 29 during an arraignment hearing."

UPDATE: The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety send clarifying information Thursday. Officials say the suspect, Xin Tong, was found in possession of chemicals and/or equipment that could be used in the production of methamphetamine. During the investigation, MSU Police did not locate a methamphetamine laboratory inside Wells Hall.

Police also noted that the felony malicious destruction of building criminal charge is based on allegations that between April 10 and April 26, the suspect intentionally damaged and/or destroyed property within Wells Hall.

So, from this it appears Tong had finished his Meth making.

From another news source: Once campus police developed probable cause to arrest Tong from their ongoing investigation the case was presented to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office earlier today, with felony charges issued shortly after.

According to Ingham County Jail Records the Department of Homeland Security has placed a hold on Tong’s bond.

Yankowski said this hold is “not part of our investigation.”
